Mangaluru, Aug 8: Passengers apprehended a woman trying to snatch a gold chain from a child's neck in the bus and handed her over to Mulky station police on Friday August 7.

Surathkal resident Chitra was returning with her child Datri and other family members in a Sarvani Travels bus plying to Mangaluru via Kinnigoli after visiting Kateel temple. The people travelling with Chitra saw a woman in the bus trying to pull the chain from the child’s neck and informed bus conductor Diwaker Shetty. The woman is thought to be from Tamil Nadu.

The bus conductor and the passengers made the woman alight at Kinnigoli bus stand and informed local people about it. Kinnigoli panchayat member Sunitha Zita Rodrigues immediately informed Mulky police. The police arrived, arrested the woman, and are conducting an investigation.

“The buses plying from Kateel are crowded on Fridays and other days of religious importance and thieves are making use of this opportunity. Such incidents are common and five such incidents have occurred when I was on duty,” said conductor Shetty.

An incident where a woman’s chain was snatched by two men on a motorbike who pretended to seek directions in Guthakadu near Kinnigoli on Thursday August 6 was another recent such incident. The men had fled on their bike.

For those who wrote sympathizing the crying lady, close your eyes and feel it was your daughter from whose neck she was stealing the chain and your daughter's neck getting injured while this evil lady is trying to pull the chain... now you tell me whether this lady is to be left free or you feel she should be punished. Please stop excusing these culprits of the society. Same small evils will be a bigger problems if left free. It's easy to stop them here than later.

Some people have asked why she is crying?. Its of-course because she is worried what might happen to her. If she cries then most likely she will be forgiven or not given much punishment. I know a lady who carried excess luggage in airport. She was asked to reduce the weight of luggage. She cried and cried and guess what? she was allowed.

I fully agree with some of the readers comments. We garland and allow the bigger criminals to give speeches. We invite them for ribbon cutting (community, communal leader? not on merit).
We pay(bribe) few thousands to get the lakhs govt endowment to our religious places.
We carry suitcases to Delhi to get MCI approval to our medical Colleges. We allow our builders to get away when we see that they have connected kitchen water rain water to sewage drainage. Can we in a similar way arrest the builders ( with links) and call the police?

There may be a gang of thieves and she may be one member of that as happened in the past. These people if unchecked may dare to do big criminal offences.

Great. A chain snatcher has attracted so much public attention. Appreciate the Public for being vigilant.
However, if she has snatched Public land, Carried out illegal Mining, looted Public Money, people would have garlanded her.
Would have voted her as People Representative.

It is sad to know that women steel to earn their daily bread.

What Panchayat member has done is good work by handing over the culprit to the police. If not some people always wait to over power or trap weaker section of the people and take advantage of them.

Why you people bring politics here. you give her Rs 200 she will attend congress rally, next day give her Rs 200 she will attend BJP rally.

None of the political parties bothered about poor people.

its pity to see the woman crying helplessly.
Making her realize her crime, it would b well pleased to have find out her real situation why she is made to commit such acts.

Compare two pictures. Day before yesterday two terrorists were brought to Mangalore, they were being treated and looking like kings.
Here a petty thief is treated worse than a terrorist.
I think panchayat member woman too forgot her womanhood.
I feel the girl(even if she is a thief) could have been treated with little more dignity.

Sadly, though robbing is a crime, we the 'common people' have been conditioned and our attention diverted by highlighting such petty incidents in a sea of corruption where even a junior engineer/assistant SI would have amassed 10s of crores of rupees, big industrial houses defaulting on l000s of crores of loans (public money) moving with in white suit/boot/pant in high end SUVs with their head held high and the foolish people after them everywhere treating them like Gods!!

Unfortunately it is an irony, too cruel to see petty criminals being treated worst than animals!! Nobody talks of the 6000 crore default of nationalized banks by a leading airline entrepreneur which has now been 'coolly' converted into an NPA and he is roaming freely!! Jai Hind!!

While outright condemning any type of robbery, if you view it from another angle, if a bank manager's (WHITE COLLAR THUGS) mind is justified to rob a huge amount of 1.5 crores of public money then??? (See the news item just below this one)
