Two youngsters drown in quarry pit at Muloor Bavaliguri

Mangaluru, Aug 9: Two youngsters drowned in a quarry pit at Muloor Bavaliguri in Bantwal taluk under Bantwal rural police station limits on Sunday August 9.

The deceased have been identified as Deekshith and Jayaprakash, both 18 years old and residents of Cheluru Maji. Two persons, who jumped into the standing water to rescue the youth also developed health complications. Both of them were admitted into a hospital at Deralakatte in serious condition. Both of them, identified as Santosh and Akshay, are showing signs of recovery. Two others however, could come out of water without much harm.

Jayaprakash was the only son of Umesh Poojary and Jalaja couple. He worked as a helper in tile fixing job in construction industry. His sister had been married of three months ago. Deekshit was one among the two sons of Janardhan Poolary and Ramani couple. He was a student of Industrial Training Insttute at Asaigoly.

It is said that the two boys along with four of their friends, Shekhar, Sudesh, Akshay, and Santosh, had been to the area for fun. They went there in three motor bikes and arrived at Bavaliguri at around 9 am. It is said that after travelling around for sometime and parking the bikes near the quarry pit at around 12 pm, Jayaprakash slipped while walking around. Deekshit jumped into the pit to save his friend, but both of them drowned and got caught in the sticky mud at the bottom of this 15 to 20 feet deep pit. Shekhar, who too jumped to save his friends, also faced peril. Sudesh and Santosh succeeded in bringing him back safe.

It is gathered that none of the six friends knew how to swim.

A person identified as Pavoor Iqbal managed to retrieve the bodies before police and firemen arrived at the spot and took up rescue operation. A complaint was filed in Bantwal rural police station about the tragedy.

The other four boys were shifted to a hospital. It is gathered that this group of friends used to travel together to different places during week ends. A local said that many youth come to this area to visit a minor waterfall.
