Over a 100 dead in Myanmar floods

Yangon, Aug 10 (IANS/EFE): More than a hundred people were killed, nearly a million were affected and most parts of Myanmar ravaged due to flooding caused by heavy rainfall since July, the state media reported on Monday.

The dead mostly hailed from the western state of Rakhine, the ministry of social welfare said.

Earlier, the government had called for evacuation of residents in low-lying areas in Ayeyarwaddy region, where the Irrawaddy river exceeded danger levels.

Around 480,000 hectares (1,186,100 acres) of farmland has been flooded, of which nearly 180,000 hectares (444,790 acres) have been destroyed, said the ministry of agriculture.

Myanmar is flooded due to heavy monsoon rains between June and October almost every year.
