Bengaluru, Aug 12: State high court has denied permission for Asaduddin Owaisi, the president of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) and Member of Parliament to hold public meeting in city.

Advocate general Ravivarma Kumar said during his argument that there are 37 cases registered against Owaisi relating to communal hatred speeches. He told the court that taking into account the law and order situation, it was right on the part of police to deny him permission to hold a public meeting in city.

The lawyers representing AIMIM party argued that several candidates from AIMIM party are contesting BBMP elections and Owaisi’s presence is required to boost their spirits. They would be denied fair chance in elections if their president does not campaign for them.

After hearing both the sides, Justice A S Bopanna delivered the judgment saying that Owaisi should not enter into city to hold any public meeting.

Owaisi was scheduled to visit city for campaigning for his candidates. But the police department had put the restriction on it. Questioning the same, AIMIM had gone to court. AIMIM representative Ahmed Bin Abdulla Balala had said that denying permission to Owaisi amounted to infringement of freedom of expression and the right of a political party to carry on its legitimate activities.
