Acharya Devvrat takes oath as Himachal governor


Shimla, Aug 12 (IANS): Acharya Devvrat was on Wednesday sworn in as the governor of Himachal Pradesh at a simple but impressive ceremony held at Raj Bhavan here.

Himachal Pradesh High Court Chief Justice Mansoor Ahmed Mir administered him the oath of office and secrecy.

Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh, his cabinet colleagues, Leader of Opposition Prem Kumar Dhumal and government functionaries were present.

Devvrat, an educationist, was born on January 18, 1959, and hails from Haryana.

"My priority would be take both the ruling and the opposition parties together for the overall development of the state," Devvrat told reporters.

Devvrat succeeded Urmila Singh, whose term ended on January 26. Rajasthan Governor Kalyan Singh was given additional charge of the hill state, following Urmila Singh's retirement.
