New Delhi, Aug 12 (IANS): A 29-year-old undertrial was killed inside Tihar jail by four murder convicts, police said on Wednesday.

Victim Deepak was killed with a sharp-edged weapon between 10 p.m. and 10.30 p.m. on Tuesday in jail number 8.

"Deepak was attacked and killed inside his ward where four other high-security criminals were lodged," Deputy Inspector General (Tihar Jail) Mukesh Prasad told IANS.

Prasad said a Tamil Nadu Police personnel posted at the prison saw the four accused beating up Deepak.

"Deepak was lying unconscious in a pool of blood when the Tamil Nadu police personal raised an alarm. He was rushed to the Deen Dayal Upadhyay hospital where doctors declared him brought dead," the police officer said.

He said the attackers used an iron fitting of a window to make the murder weapon.

Deepak was in Tihar Jail since 2008 in connection with over 14 cases of dacoity, robbery, kidnapping, attempt to murder and murder.

The attackers have been identified as Satpal Bedi, Manpreet, Sooraj and Riyaz.

Satpal is a convict in a double murder case while Manpreet allegedly killed another inmate inside Tihar earlier.

"The four have been regularly violating the prison norms and have been involved in many cases of assault and criminal force inside the jail," Prasad said.

A case has been registered at Hari Nagar police station and a magisterial inquiry ordered into the case.

The incident comes a day after a murder trial allegedly committed suicide accusing the jail officials of harassing and demanding money from him.
