Kerala fisheries varsity to help Kenya, Liberia

Kochi, Aug 13 (IANS): Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS) is to set up integrated fish villages in Kenya in east Africa and Liberia in west Africa.

A team of government delegates representing Kenya and Liberia visited KUFOS and has asked the varsity authorities to provide them technical assistance in implementing the programmes in their countries.

Simon Komu, who led the Kenyan delegation, said the collaboration could be initiated in knowledge transferring and exchange of scientists and students.

"The projects such as cage culture, pen culture and ornamental fish villages among tribes being initiated by KUFOS are model extension activities beneficial to the improvement of inland fishery resources of India. We also would like to start such types of research oriented outreach models in our country," he said.

McMillon Wilmot, who led the Liberian team, asked KUFOS Vice Chancellor B.Madhusoodana Kurup to send university students and researchers to Liberia and propose an action plan required for the improvement of fisheries in the country after taking stock of the situation there.
