Restrictions in Srinagar to thwart separatist celebrations

Srinagar, Aug 14 (IANS): The authorities on Friday imposed restrictions in parts of Srinagar city to prevent separatist celebrations on Pakistan's Independence Day.

"Restrictions have been imposed in seven areas of Khanyar, Nowhatta, Rainwari, M.R. Gunj, Maisuma, Kralkhud and Safa Kadal in order to maintain law and order," a senior police officer told IANS here.

Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, the chairman of the moderate Hurriyat group, has been placed under house arrest here.

Heavy deployment of paramilitary forces, CRPF and police has been ensured in the areas that see waiving of Pakistan flags by youth groups on August 14 every year.

Top sources here told IANS that the union home ministry had sent a letter to the state government stressing anti-national activities to be dealt firmly.
