UN chief deeply saddened over China blasts

United Nations, Aug 14 (IANS): UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Thursday said he was deeply saddened to learn of the loss of life and injuries to scores of people as a result of deadly explosions in China's Tianjin city.

"The secretary-general extends his condolences to the families of the victims, including the fire fighters who made the ultimate sacrifice," UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric told a daily briefing here.

"He expresses his sympathies to the people and Government of China, and pays tribute to all involved in the emergency response," Dujarric was quoted as saying by Xinhua.

At least 50 people were killed and over 500 injured as thunderous blasts tore through a warehouse in Tianjin on Wednesday night. The explosions -- like an earthquake -- gutted over 2,500 cars and caused widespread destruction.
