30 pilgrims dead in Jharkhand in five days


Ranchi, Aug 14 (IANS): The death of 13 pilgrims in Jharkhand on Friday has pushed the number of pilgrims killed in the state in the last five days to 30.

At least 13 pilgrims who were on their way to their home in Bihar's Siwan district after offering prayers at Puri Jagannath Temple in Odisha were killed when a truck rammed into their van.

The accident took place at Ichagarh in Seraikela Kharsawan district, around 130 km from Ranchi.

Six pilgrims died in a road accident in Koderma on Wednesday when they were returning after offering prayer at Shiva temple of Deoghar.

On Monday, 11 devotes died in stampede in Deoghar, forcing the state government to admit an administrative failure. Four officials, including Deputy Commissioner Amit Kumar and Superintendent of Police P. Murugan, were suspended for dereliction of duty.
