Mobile phone calls suspended in J&K

Srinagar, Aug 15 (IANS): Calls, SMS and internet services on mobile phones were on Saturday suspended in Jammu and Kashmir as a security precaution on Independence Day, an official said.

The suspension on services was applicable to all service providers, including BSNL, Airtel, Aircel, Idea and Vodafone, in the state.

The step was taken to prevent militants from triggering remote-controlled explosive devices through the mobile phone, a top official, who did not wish to be named, told IANS.

The practice has been followed for many years when the services are suspended from around 8.30 a.m. till the time the state Independence Day functions in Jammu and in Kashmir come to an end.
