Interference in academic matters extreme under NDA, says Nobel laureate Amartya Sen

New Delhi, Aug 16 (PTI): The extent of government intervention in academic matters has become "extraordinarily common" and often "politically extreme" under the NDA regime, says Nobel laureate Amartya Sen.

He, however, says this is not the first time that a government has interfered in academic matters with its own views as the previous UPA government's record in non-interference was "far from impeccable".

He, however, says this is not the first time that a government has interfered in academic matters with its own views as the previous UPA government's record in non-interference was "far from impeccable".

"But the extent of intervention has become extraordinarily common and often politically extreme under the present regime," 81-year-old Sen writes in his new book "The Country of First Boys", in which he tries to seek an understanding of India's history and the demands of its future.

"And often enough, the persons chosen for heading institutions of national importance have been exceptionally dedicated to promoting Hindutva priorities," he adds. The 1998 Economics Nobel winner then cites the example of the newly-appointed head of the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR), Yellapragada Sudershan Rao, saying he "may not be known for research in history, but his Hindutva-oriented opinions are well-known".

Similarly, the new head of the Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR), Lokesh Chandra, has shared with us his view that Modi is, in fact, "a reincarnation of God", he says. Published by Oxford University Press, the book also has essays on justice, identity, deprivation, inequalities, gender politics, education, the media and the Nalanda University.

Sen alleges that the new government has been active in trying to impose its own views on many academic institutions, and Nalanda University is not the only such institution the intellectual independence of which has been under considerable threat in recent months.

On May 30, the government announced that former Foreign Minister of Singapore George Yeo will be the new Chancellor of the Nalanda University, over two months after Sen withdrew his candidature to the post for a second term, claiming the Narendra Modi government does not want him to continue.

There was a generation who stood firmly behind congress. Congress was known then for legargic, lazy kind of approach in implimentation policies and taking strong approach against corruption. They kept praising congress.

Today, such kind of people firmly behind BJP, ignoring all the ills it is committing day in and out.
The mix which BJP carries is very very dangerous. It is religion, crime, corruption and arrogance, unlike congress which carried lethargic attitude and corruption.

Education gives reason and reason to seek logical answers . When education itself is turned around and made people rubber stamp, then there is no threat to power. This is BJP idealogy, this is RSS mythology. End of the day, it is people who will decide what they want their future generation to live with. A sudden raise like Nazi germany and fall, or raise like america steadily over the years, with liberty and freedom.

OK agreed..but at present can you give one option other than MODI to vote as a PM..who RAHUL, SONIA, KEJRIWAL, MULAYAM , MAMATA..who?..Congress will go down to history if they continue like this..win or lose part of the game, but why they are roaming only in Delhi..every state slipped out from them, or allies captured..why only concentrated on Delhi!!..yes demise of Congress is not good for INDIA, the space they leave will be occupied by AAP,OWAISI,TMC like parties which will take us backward..But even after 2014 election they didnt learned lesson..read what ANTONY said after election..you just cant win election by ignoring majorities feelings..BJP encashes it, how can its wrong..YOGA boycott, Crying for Memon will back fire them..

what can you expect from this man who gobbled crores of tax payers money when he was the Vice chancellor during UPA just for holding meetings. Again it is the same A sen who has openly endorsed his hatred for curent PM saying he does not want him as PM even though majority want him.
What about irregularites exposed by CAG during the tenure of this A Sen who held six meeting in various foreign locales witghout sanction from Finance Committee. What did he do as VC of Nalanada except draining tax payer's monety. Now he wants to give sermons to others. No sympathy for you Mr Hypocrite

When the first democratically elected communist Government came into power in the world under the leadership of Sri. E. M. Sankaran Namboothiripad in 1956, their first strategy was to take control of the educational system of Kerala which was mainly controlled by the Christians, Hindus and Muslims of Kerala.

That misguided and wayward strategy of the communist Government led her way to failure.

The BJP Government came into power with paradise promise, but now totally deviated without having any capacity to fulfill any of the economic promises because it costs trillions of dollars but now working underground to expand the party through taking control of anything they can, thus to demoralize and suppress the opposition. Let us see, how far this drama will be advancing?

@ j.anata and Jitendra, it proves how BLIND Bhakths you are. You are the same people who was happy when Sen got Nobel because of Indian origin and proudly said India got another Nobel though he himself told that he is not Indian but British. Your previous NDA government is the one who named after an Indian satellite in honour of Kalpana when she wore the American colours and died for America but did nothing for India. You people are the worst double standard people I have seen. Now when Sen makes comment against NDA you cant take his opinion as valid. What a shame that we have blind Bhakths like you and no wonder India is still labelled as developing country.

but this MAN(modi) has neither the courage nor the ability. If any person gets a big chair by chance for which he is not capable, the situation will arise like this. He has no agendas for the country and the countrymen except the hidden agendas favouring the the wrong doers and his agendas are the agendas of RSS and the communal forces. The person who has open support for the Hindu terror, how he will face the real public. He can't. It's his weakness that in spite of having 400 with him he can't face a figure of40. It's shame for our democracy.... What I feel that this big man himself is not confident about the people around him. A wrong MAN never be confident and belief on his own men.
