Abu Dhabi: Modi visits iconic mosque, UAE allots land to build temple

ABU DHABI, Aug 16 (Agencies) : In the UAE to hold talks on enhancing cooperation in trade and security, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today began his two-day visit to the Gulf nation by visiting an iconic mosque in Abu Dhabi and later interacted with Indian workers.

"This magnificent place of worship strikes you with its size and beauty. It brings together exquisite skills and creations from around the world, and serves as a fine example of human achievements and unity," the PM wrote in the visitors book at the Sheikh Zayed mosque, the third largest in the world.

The PM also posed for a selfie at the mosque, which is constructed with marble brought in from all across the globe, including from India.

Modi also tweeted later, thanking UAE govt for alloting land to build temple in UAE capital Abu Dhabi. "I am very thankful to the UAE Govt for their decision to allot land in order to build a Temple in Abu Dhabi. This is a great step."

PM Modi then visited a residential camp that is home to some 28,000 Indians workers, where he interacted with nearly 300 of them.

Mr Modi, the first Indian PM to visit the UAE in 34 years, was received by Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi at the airport, in a departure from protocol.

Earlier, the PM had described the Gulf country as a "mini-India" close to his heart.

About 2.6 million Indians live in the UAE. "India and UAE have everything to be a top priority for each other. This is the way I look at the UAE. The Gulf region is vital for India's economic, energy and security interests," said PM Modi in an interview to Dubai-based newspaper Khaleej Times.

Improving trade and investment ties between the two nations is high on the PM's agenda and his trip is packed with business meetings. Trade with the UAE is pegged at $60 billion a year, down from 2013 but still third highest after trade with the US and China.

UAE's concern over the spread of Islamic State in the region is also expected to feature in talks.

Tomorrow, PM Modi will go to the Dubai Cricket Stadium, where he will address about 50,000 Indians.

Modi arrives in UAE, received by Abu Dhabi crown prince

Abu Dhabi, Aug 16 (IANS): Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday arrived in the UAE, in the first prime ministerial visit after three decades. He was received by Abu Dhabi's Crown Prince Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and accorded a ceremonial welcome at the airport.

Modi is here on a two-day official visit that will see talks focused on boosting cooperation in energy and trade.

In a significant gesture, five brothers of the crown prince were also present at the Abu Dhabi Presidential Airport to receive Modi, according to tweets by external affairs ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup.

"For Crown Prince and his five brothers to receive a dignitary is a rare gesture reflecting imp attached to PM's visit," tweeted Swarup.

Modi is the first Indian prime minister to visit the UAE after the 1981 visit of then prime minister Indira Gandhi.

Ahead of his visit, Modi said in an interview to Khaleej Times: "We have a range of common security and strategic concerns in the region, including terrorism and extremism.

"So India and the UAE have everything to be a top priority for each other. This is the way I look at the UAE. The Gulf region is vital for India's economic, energy and security interests."

"I want to see the UAE as our foremost trade and investment partner. We would build regular and effective cooperation in a full range of security challenges. Our armed forces would engage with each other more.

"We will work together more closely in international forums and in addressing regional challenges. There are no limits to our relationship," Modi said.

Modi also described the UAE as a "Mini India" and vowed to build a "regular and effective cooperation in security challenges".

The UAE is home to 2.6 million Indian expatriates.

"I have begun my regional engagement with the UAE. This tells you the importance I attach to the UAE. We have resolved to sustain regular high level engagements and build a strong and comprehensive strategic partnership."

Modi will hold official talks with the leadership of Abu Dhabi and later visit Masdar City, a planned city project in Abu Dhabi, where he is expected to spend some time watching presentations.

Later, he will meet business people and focus on investments.

On Monday, he will first visit the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi and later travel to Dubai, where after meeting the Dubai ruler, he will attend a grand public reception hosted for him at the Dubai Cricket Grounds.

The public reception, which begins at 7.30 p.m., is expected to see 50,000 Indian expatriates attending.

Hello all Muslims and Hindus and of all religions brothers...
Let tell u Muslims have never built any mosque on others land...MUSLIMS has always built mosque after purchasing a land and paying more than the price of that land... U ppl can see the record...
Ever their prophet s.a.w.s has always warned and restricted them of build mosques on others land forcefully... It is ordered to break that mosque if made by taking land falsely... So they begged for a land to built mosque... Got it..
And evry one know how most of the temple in India are made.. First. Keeping stone near some tree or road side .. Then increasing it day by day then forcing govt. To sanction that place for temple at free of cost...

India/UAE relationship, foundation laid by the then PM Indira Gandhi in 1981 is so strong that it did not shake an inch. There was no necessity for any other leader to visit the country again.Today UAE is home for 2.6 million Indian expatriates. How did they reach UAE. Only because of the relationship built in by the previous GOVTIf it was shaken Yep I would agree that the PM has visited to make it stronger.

UAE Govt had sanctioned the land to built the Temple in the year 2013 and the PM is claiming to his credit.
PRE election roar to bring back black money from Swiss is not yet fulfilled.Trip to Swiss and Italy is a last choice
UAE trip could be to find ways to deposit black money.

Millions of Indians, regardless of their religion, faith or status, are thankful to the magnanimity of UAE Rulers for allowing a place of worship in their land for the construction of a temple. Granting permission for one of the largest gathering of foreign nationals in UAE history, for our esteemed PM to address fellow countrymen is not a small gesture either. In way, the world’s best managed country & world’s largest democracy have so much to gain from this partnership. India & UAE are 2nd & 3rd largest trade partners to each other as of now. Millions of Indians have toiled with their sweat & blood to make UAE what it is today & in return, millions homes in India have prospered because of the employment opportunities UAE provided. UAE laws safeguard the interests of labourers better than in any gulf country. Clean, neat & one of the safest place on earth for law abiding residents & UAE is home away from home for a large number of Indians.
Not responding to negativity, cynicism & personal attacks, our PM is moving ahead to create a better place for India in the league of nations. Indians of all religions, faiths & creeds are equal, is the message he is espousing, in the true meaning & spirit of Secularism. God Bless You.

Ramesh S…, what do you mean by India allowed to build mosque more than 100 years before…?

Was India a Hindu Country 100 years before to allow Muslims to build a mosque? India was a secular country then and is a secular country now and will remain a secular country in future too. What if Muslims or Christians tell you the same that India allowed to build Hindu temple more than 100 years before?

Come on Ramesh S, you too please open your eyes and I think you too are not from India or don’t know history! We all should be proud to be Indians and happy to be part of a great country India where everyone has right to practice what they believe.

I just can say WOW and really feeling happy about the proceedings & developments pertaining to Modi’s visit to UAE. Congratulations to all the Indians and a very big thank you to the great rules and the people of this great country UAE. I also take this opportunity to congratulate all my Hindu countrymen living in the UAE. Now on they don’t have to pray in their homes or need not travel all the way to Dubai for praying in a temple.

Indeed a great gesture from the rulers of UAE in allocating a land to construct a Hindu temple in AUH. This very much shows the religious tolerance in Islam where Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) had said “to you be your religion and to me be mine”. Islam never opposes anyone from practicing what they believe. Great to see a Hindu temple will be built in the capital of UAE which will for sure open a new dimension among Indian Hindus to look at Islam & Muslims in India & elsewhere unlike what the media has portrayed Islam & Muslims other way!

Let’s try to live united as ONE and make our society a beautiful place to live.

Though I am critic of Modi in some ways, in some ways I like his willingness to strengthen ties with nations. We just criticize him for his foreign trips. But his trips are not just mere trips. His trips intended to strengthen our ties with the World. We need strong ties with Middle East as well as lot of our brothers and sisters are earning their daily bread here. It is surprising to see none of our PM's for the last 34 years didn't visit UAE. UAE is always friendly towards India and we need to strengthen this friendship. I just wish all his trips will be fruitful for strong India. Jai Hind.

Dr. Kamath..I don't have any political affiliations. I criticize Modi in some aspects and I appreciate him in other aspects. For me, building strong nation is most important than political affiliations. I see here lot of people criticize just for the purpose of criticizing. This is not fair. Interacting with Indian labourers is good gesture by our PM. Infact it is the labourers who built this beautiful city called UAE. Visiting grand mosque is another good gesture. But unfortunately most of the people say it's an eyewash. UAE government gave land to build temple. This shows UAE's support for communal harmony. I do agree with you. Mr. Modi must visit in India the worship centers of other religious people as he did in UAE.

Also, as he has shown greater concern for the blue collar labor force from India, mainly from the Southern States like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, A.P. etc where the BJP is not getting deeper rooting, likewise Mr. Modi must visit some of the poorest areas of India, let him start with the slums of New Delhi at first.

Dr, what do you mean by 'honestly speaking?' does it mean rest of the time you speak dishonestly? As for your analogy with sun, perhaps you don't know that our sun is an average star in the galaxy in the universe that comprises millions of such galaxies. It's time you widened your horizons.

Modiji and his government should think about NRI's working in all gulf and middle east countries.. Around 80% employees working in these regions are low paid skilled/unskilled labourers..Many of them have legal issues and their passport and other necessary documents are impounded by Employer. Indian government should outline some kind of benefit schemes for these employees after their retirement after age/sickness or due to redundancy .... Any how a prime minister from india visiting UAE after 33 year long years is a good news for India.. Kudos to Narendra Bai Modi

The Rs value would be plunging further due to the devaluation of the Chinese currency, also the oil price would be plunging further down to the over supply and declined used of oil everywhere in the world.

The new oil producing through horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing, the oil production in the U.S. since 2008 has been increased to 90%. The declined commodity prices, especially that of oil would be creating far greater economic challenge around the world, in the GCC countries very seriously. Last month, the unfavorable balance of trade of Kuwait was 5.4 billion dollars.
How far at this lower oil price of over 68 dollar/bl when compared with the June 2014 price can keep the oil producing countries without getting into red ink?

The oil producing countries would be faced with economic contraction, then only everybody will realize the gravity of the international economic crisis
