Mangaluru, Aug 16: UAE-based Konkani Cultural Organization (KCO) and Samanvaya Trust, Mangaluru on Sunday August 16 jointly organized a programme to award scholarships to 131 deserving students at St Joseph's Seminary hall in the city.

Addressing the gathering, Fr Joseph Martis, rector of St Joseph's Seminary said, "I am happy to be part of this scholarship distribution programme. Helping someone in education is a spiritual work. The Bible says that God loves the giver, and we see this spiritual habit here. KCO has collected over Rs 1 crore and given to the needy. Its members have not received the money on a platter. Instead, they have worked hard for this and saved from their earnings.

"They had no obligation to give their hard-earned money for this scholarship. They could have used their money for their personal needs, but they chose to give it as a contribution to the society. Their family has supported them in their noble cause. We acknowledge their contribution and sacrifice. Always be grateful to them. Today they have given their contribution to you, tomorrow when you start working you should do the same for others," Fr Martis advised the beneficiaries.

Leslie Rego, an ace compere, said, "KCO members who are working abroad with an intention to give something back to their homeland have been contributing to this scholarship. With their efforts, they have collected funds from people who work abroad and given that money to needy people. You should remember what you have got and give it back when you attain a good position. Some say good people become stars but I say stars join together and become good people. Always remember these good people in your prayers."

Fr J B Crasta, parish priest of Rosario Church said, "I congratulate KCO on taking up this noble cause. Being good at studies is not enough. Along with studies you should be good at sports and co-curricular activities too."

Leo Rodrigues, former president of KCO said, "We have given you (students) a small amount. Though the amount might be small, use it for a good cause. Scholarships are given by many organizations. But there are many people who are in difficulties due to different diseases, and we are planning to extend a helping hand to them."

Michael D'Silva, president of KCO told the students, "Today you are receiving help. But tomorrow when you are in a good position, help the needy and the underprivileged. I wish all of you a bright future."

Fr Ronald Cutinho welcomed the gathering and Amitha Costa, treasurer of KCO thanked the gathering.

Sr Irene Mathias, KCO office-bearers and members Robert Rego, Oswald M. D'Souza, Gerald D'Mello, Bennette D'Mello, Frankline D'Cunha, Gracy D'Silva, Lavina Rodrigues, Audrey D'Mello, Amitha D'Costa, Jacintha Fernandes, and others were present on the dais.
