Dubai: PM Modi addresses massive crowd, lauds expatriates, thanks UAE

Daijiworld Media Network - Dubai
With IANS & PTI Inputs

Dubai, Aug 17: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday August 17 addressed a massive crowd of over 50,000 Indians at Dubai cricket ground here and said that India is proud of its expatriates who are toiling hard day and night in the UAE.

"You are the people who have been working hard to earn your livelihoods, some from 10 years, some from 60 years, and at the same time, you have never stepped back in making India proud. When it rains in India, my Indian friend in Dubai opens his umbrella, and when there is drought in India, the Indian in Dubai cannot sleep peacefully," he said, evoking a thundering applause from the crowd.

"When A B Vajpayee was the PM, India had done nuclear test which had shocked the world. Some were angry and overnight sanctions were imposed on India and the country slipped into economic difficulties. Vajpayee had then urged NRIs staying around the globe to help India, and today I can say with pride that people working in the Gulf contributed the most by responding to Vajpayee's call.

"Every Indian living here is connected to every part of India. During the last Lok Sabha elections, when the results were announced, not only the whole of India, but the entire Dubai danced in joy," he said.

He also wished the crowd on India's Independence Day, and addressing the Kerala community, greeted them in Malayalam on the Malayalam New Year which falls on August 17, much to the delight of the crowd.

Reiterating the importance of his visit and taking a dig at the previous UPA government, he said, "Every week 700 flights connect India with UAE, but it took 34 years for a PM to come here. Sometimes I feel the previous governments left some good things to me, hence I have had the good fortune to take up so many good works. My visit to Abu Dhabi and Dubai are one of these good things."

Lauding UAE and its rulers, he said, "In Abu Dhabi the Crown Prince and in Dubai Sheikh Al Makhtoum showered so much love on me - I will never forget the love, welcome and respect they bestowed on me. Their love is not for any individual - it is for the 125 crore Indians, it is for the changed image of India, it is a reiteration of how India is making its presence felt in the world, it is in honour of that change. I am very grateful to the rulers of Dubai and Abu Dhabi."

The Prime Minister got the cheering crowd to give a standing ovation to Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan for his gesture in giving land for a temple for Indians.

"I give my heartfelt thanks to the crown prince and the UAE and Dubai rulers for the gesture," Modi said to the cheering crowd.

"On the one hand there is terrorism in the name of religion, and innocents are killed; and at such a time of concern, the crown prince has given land in Abu Dhabi for a temple for the Indians," he said.

"The people who know Abu Dhabi, they realise that the decision is of such importance. All Indians should thank him. I appeal to you all people to thank him with a round of applause for the gesture, and give a standing ovation to the Crown Prince," he said.

"An atmosphere of trust has been created during my two-day visit to the UAE. The bridge of trust between Indian and UAE is now so strong that it will last for generations to come," he added.

"The Crown Prince has promised an investment of Rs 4.5 lac crore in India. This is a testimony to the trust we have built. It is becuase of the change in India's image. India is striding forward.

"Today when you hear India's name your eyes twinkle and you hold your head high with pride. Today the way the world looks at India has changed. What is the reason? It is not Modi - it is because of the 125 crore Indians. After 30 years a political party got elected in India with majority. Today when a world leader looks into Modi's eyes, he does not see Modi - he sees 125 crore Indians, he sees the swift economic growth India is achieving. All the leading economic bodies in the world, be it IMF or World Bank, have said that today India is the fastest growing economy in the world. This change has come in just one year.

"We launched Make in India initiative a few months ago. I have been telling the world to Make in India. India is a land of possibilities and opportunities, this is land where 65 percent of the population is below 35 years. Very soon, with initiatives like Digital India and others we will climb the zenith of success," he added.

Calling for a united fight against terrorism, Modi said, "Indians have become victims of terroism for 40 years. Our people have been slaughtered. Today there was bomb blast in Bangkok and innocents were killed. It is time for the world community to fight unitedly against terrorism and those who support terrorims. There is no good terrorism and bad terrorism and no good Taliban and bad Taliban. Decide today if you support terrorism or humanity. To this day India is becoming victim of such violence every other day, and we have been trying to find a solution."

Modi also took a veiled swipe at Pakistan over terrorism, saying India and the UAE have come out with a clear message against terrorism in their joint statement, "without caring for anyone".

India and the UAE have come out against terrorism, "without any camouflage, in clear terms, without caring for anyone, given a clear message against terrorism", Modi said, to thousands of cheering Indian diaspora at the Dubai Cricket Stadium.

In a jibe at Pakistan, he said "those who need to understand will do so" - the message of the joint statement against terrorism by India and the UAE.

"Samajhnewale samajh jayengey. Akalmand ko ishara kafi hai," he said.

While talking about terrorism, Modi took a swipe at UN Security Council, saying that it has not been able to define terrorism and which country should be declared as "terrorist state".

In this context, he said a proposal on Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism has been pending for long and the UAE has backed India's stand on the matter.

"In Nagaland there was problem of insurgency even before Independence, and this slowly spread to other states. But less than a month ago, we moved ahead successfully with different factions of Nagaland after 60-70 years of insurgency (in that northeastern state)," Modi said referring to the peace accord signed on August 3 between the government and the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Isak-Muivah).

"I am citing Nagaland because I want to tell people across the world, including the youth, that however complicated a problem might be, it can be solved through dialogue," he said. He also took the example of the recent Land Boundary Agreement with Bangladesh to stress the point that issues can be resolved only through dialogue.

"Forsake the path of violence - this is the need of the hour," he urged.

The Prime Minister spoke on a range of issues including ties with Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Maldives, Bhutan and steps for bolstering connectivity and trust among SAARC countries.

On efforts to boost intra-SAARC connectivity on the pattern of European Union, Modi said that "some people" had problems, in oblique reference to Pakistan which was not forthcoming in finalising a pact.

"Should we stop because some people had problem. Let them stay where they are. We are moving ahead. India, Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh have signed a pact for building connectivity. It is a major decision which will have implication in the long run,' said Modi.

The Prime Minister said India will next year launch a SAARC satellite which will provide free services to SAARC countries, meant for common people.

"A new life has been infused in SAARC which was earlier a forum for sparring and efforts to corner India. Our dream is to take development of SAARC nations to newer heights," he said adding "Trust is important in international relations."

Welfare fund to help diaspora

Modi also announced a welfare fund for the Indian diaspora in the UAE to help them in legal cases, and said he would also look into the issue of increasing the number of schools for the diaspora.

Modi said an e-migrant portal has been created to help Indian migrant workers and an online platform 'MADAD' to assist the diaspora.

Modi said he has instructed the Indian embassy in UAE to solve some technical problems dogging the e-migrant portal in a month's time. "I am sure the technical problem will be solved by the embassy," he said.

He also said that most Indian workers do not have money to run from place to place to solve their problems.

"I have directed the embassy that wherever Indians are collected, to hold counsellor camps once a month, and sit and meet the workers and take steps to resolve the problems," he said, to loud cheering.

He said a welfare fund for diaspora is to be set up for their benefit, to help them legally so that they can deal with problems.

With regard to school problems, Modi said he has spoken about it and "told them to increase the number of schools. Let us see, we will take steps to benefit you", he said.

Modi said "wherever my Indians are, we never see the colour of the passport, their link with the motherland is enough", to loud cheering.

He ended his speech by asking the crowd to say after him "Bharat Mata ki Jai" with raised arms.

The entire stadium with the thousands of Indians stood up, and with raised arms, raised the slogan after the prime minister.

Modi's speech lasted for over an hour.

Modi visit to U.A.E and gathered 40000, if U.A.E Sheikh visit India then he may find less than 100 U.A.Ens. We should to feel shame being Indian (I too work in Gulf) that still we dependent with other country for our daily bread. We celebrated 69th independence victory but have not survived to lead our life with our nation. Fake promise from PM and political leaders to pool the citizens. You will find rare visit from foreign country leaders have come to India from fast years were our leader completed 25 trips within in a short time. If our PM addressing to foreign investor to invest in India then where to send Indian entrepreneurs? Does foreign countries will give chance to Indian entrepreneurs invest in their countries? …. Our leaders should to learn from all these gulf countries, such a small country and how they developed. I was shocked when stepped to gulf first time by seeing gulf structure and system and made me to think India is 30 years back in front of gulf countries. So don’t blame particular party or leader…… think that we have failed to good leader.

Nice to know you get your news from the Pakistani paper the dawn, it is a fine paper indeed.

You should understand why UAE is pampering Mr Modi, then. And Mr Modi is walking right into the trap.

Have you heard about Yemen and you will know why. UAE wants Pakistan to contribute troops in Yemen, but Pakistan has refused to do so for good reason as it wants to balance its relationship between Iran and Gulf countries. All of this is done by UAE to tickle Pakistan as Pakistan refused to be involved in Yemen. That is what the Dawn headline mentions, that Modi is stepping into the breach in UAE Pak relationship.

In diplomatic terms what Mr Modi has done is foolish. He will get nothing out of this except some token gestures land for the temple etc.

But Modi is Modi, he is happy with the photo ops.

It seems that when PM Modi feels his popularity is dipping he will undertake a trip to a foreign country with an Indian expat community presence and have the community over there organize such publicity gatherings in an attempt to have his popularity revive and also to divert the public's attention from his party's/government's poor show and scam accusations.
Recently, he has had negative news against him with the washout of the monsoon session of Parliament and focus on three scam-tainted BJP ministers over whom he has been absolutely silent when at other times he never misses an opportunity to open his mouth and comment.

Also a nice move to get some service by online as well as Mobile App by giving 30 days time for embessy peopels to look on it. Overall a power pack speech by indirectly appriciating himself as well as his party. As per reports I have got from my sources the oil prices have risen in the UAE inspite of the fall in the international oil prices is because the UAE have decided to withdraw fully or partly the subsidy on petroleum & diesel in view of the in revenue caused by lower income from oil exports.

Yes, I do wonder how shows like this are arranged, systematically, just as SRK or BigB get things done for them. Well, they are celebrities, need publicity, fame but, what need is there for the PM of a country do to this ? Is he the first dignitary to arrive into UAE ?

Royals, Presidents pay bilateral visits but there never was any arrangement like this. It may have taken 34 years for a PM from India to visit UAE but there were several visits from UAE leaders to India - was any member of the public made known of the occasion ?

Doesn't it cost revenue ? Where does it come from ? You may say businessmen in UAE may have booted it - well, is this a necessity ? Couldn't our PM advise for the revenue to be used for a better cause than for his publicity ? Look at the state of labour camps in UAE ! Worst than WWII Ghettos. Were our businessmen concerned ? Some of their staff is living in such pathetic conditions !

Self propaganda ??? Exactly, and he enjoys it ! He may have watched the video several times over by now.

Celebrities would have done it for fame, they would have done it for their movie release or so. However, when Modiji was here, it was definitely not Modiji, It was India that made the news and I super proud of it– But do not forget the fact that, it has really enhanced the ways other nationalities look at us. In a multi cultural environment, where there’s room expatriates, its v important to step in some way or the other.
Re costs, let the sponcers decide take that part of it, as we haven’t given a penny.

Definitely, Modiji has also worked on touching the labour class, If the passport was seized by the respective company, now the Indian Ministry has plans to provide supplementary paper work to help the labour/ employee travel. Doesn’t that sound great.
Lets just wait and watch for India’s development and see where will it reach.

And for god sake pleaseeeeeeeeee youtube Mr. Modi's speech and listen carefully the things which will benefit the Indians especially the laborers in the UAE.

I do not understand what Modi achieves by going to foreign countries and doing such stadium speeches. No other public leader does these kind of campaign speeches when visiting another country out of respect for that country. I am sure Obama, Clinton or JFK could have gathered a crowds of a million people easily whichever country they may go, but they do not do this out of respect for the country they are visiting. It is very rude and disrespectful and cheap when visting someone else's land, to be trying to gather attention to oneself in this way.

Modi appears very foolish doing these kind of tamasha shows in foreign lands. This is all about Modi the person and nothing about India and its people. Even the quality of the speech is mediocre. Mr Modi is no Vajpayee, he is not even an Advani. You do not go to foreign lands and discuss your internal politics, no visiting leader does this.

I am sure he is a laughing stock for foreign leaders due to this kind of behavior.

I thought Modi was a intelligent man, but now I know he is a propaganda creasted leader, probably just a step ahead of Rahul in his intellect. He probably would never have become the PM if not for congress being lead by someone as stupid as Rahul. So Modi wants Rahul as his opponent and should be thankful to him for making his PM , if you know what I mean.

I hope Modi stops these foreign jaunts and focuses on solving real issues faced by people back in India, especially related to corruption both within his party and outside.

This foreign tamasha has run its course dear PM.

    ONE SIMPLE QUESTION TO YOU.

WHY DID THE CITIZENS OF INDIA ELECTED THE GRACEFUL CONGRESS AND THE BRAHSTA/BESHARAM JHOOT PARTY/BJP WAS UNSEATED/UNELECTED FOR NEARLY 60 YEARS???!!!

Bhopal tragedy is not made by Congress. It is an accident.

The government of Madhya Pradesh confirmed a total of 3,787 deaths related to the gas release. Further another 8000 have died in the gas related diseases.

From where did you get 30,000 death scores.
I know the bhakts of Chaaiwaala are good in adding the zeeeeroooooos.

GIVE YOUR EVIDENCE OF 30.000 DEATHS FROM GAS TRAGEDY.

Why Quotrochi was not arrested and jailed by the NDA/BJP during their tenure.
2G was started by NDA. Coal related corruption was started by BJP not congress.

NEHRUJI BROUGHRT INDIA FROM DUST TO THE HIGHEST.
When British left India Our Soldiers were fighting with bricks and bats with china without having arms and ammunitions due to we were of a new nation. No arms factories.

In Two wars with Pakistan we haven't loose as much soldiers we lost in Kargil war.

    YOU ARE CLEARLY EXPOSED.
At least open your eyes and don’t be blind.

Chaaiwaala’s one year 3 months kaarnaamaas.

Why did Congress become 44 from 216 seats if they were pro-poor?

Why did Congress not even win a single seat in 15 big states?

If you add 11 seats from Kerala & 9 from K'Nataka, Dongis did win only 2 in UP (Mother & Son) Rest was completely win on the candidates appeal only. This is the situation the 129 year Grand Old party is in & Her you are spewing venom on your own country!

    Ramesh,

No offence to you, I am unable to make sense out of your email.

BTW I live in Silicon Valley itself and Mr Modi is planning another stadium speech here, which will be mainly attended by his cheerleaders.

Do you think it is dignified for a Prime Minister of a country of 1.3 Crore people to behave in this fashion. You visit a foreign country as their guest representing your people, you engage in silent diplomacy for your people. Do you know of any other leader who visits foreign countries and then gathers a crowd of his country men there and gives a campaign speech?

There is something called dignity and I think Mr Modi has to learn it from Mr Vajpayee at least.

The greatest leader of the ladt 50 years Nelson Mandela visited many countries, he never accumulated people to give speeches, he could have easily got several million people wherever he went. What Mr Modi is doing is really cheap and not dignified for a PM. He is arranging these crowds for himself and giving speeches to them. What diplomatic purpose is achieved by these shows ?, other than trying to show the foreign leaders that Modi is a celebrity in India. Intelligent people laugh at this.

There is a lot to be learn from Mr Vajpayee, just giving Bharath Ratna does not suffice.

Despite all his other drawbacks I expected better than this from Modi, but now I feel he is PM just because he is one step better than Rahul and Rahul Gandhi is a buffoon.

    Ajay,
Your comments on Modi are very, very well appreciated. However, I dont see any good reason why you drag Rahul's name (twice) into your comments when this article has nothing to do with him ? Are you trying to show the Modi Bhakts that your criticism of Modi does not mean that you are a supporter of the Congress (i.e.unbiased) which is what you feel the backlash comments from Modi bhakts to your comments might be ? Hence stressing on words like 'buffoon', 'stupid' etc. ?
Whatever your opinion about Rahul may be is fine but my opinion is that it was needless to drag his name here (irrespective of whether I support the Congress party or not).
I don't intend to antagonize you with my comments and I cannot dictate what others should or should not comment. I am only just expressing my observation & opinion.

US had even kept close watch on things happening in India regarding Pokhran test. That is why due to the presuure from US previous govt kept on hold all these tests.
When ABV took over the office he immediately called APJ Abdul kalam and asked to take up the task and it was done secretly.

Yeah, Mr. Modi conveniently forgot to mention the contributions to Indian Foreign Exchange reserves made by the NRIs ranging from maids, drivers to doctors and engineers.

Of course there is no need for him to remember this as then he would have to promise the NRIs some reforms back home.

A TV channel was showing preparations for Mr. Modi's speech at Dubai Stadium, where, a few women said they wish to perform for him on the stage. But those who performed, weren't novice Indians settled locally but were perfectly professional dancers. Where did they come from ? Did Modi bring them along as were the compering pair and celebrity Master Chef ? Entire UAE did not have two able compering individuals and a chef ? And, guess what - which TV Channel will dedicate entire one and a half hour to air Modi's speech alone ? Don't they have anything else in the world to cover apart from this ? What shall we call this ? If not self propaganda, what else ? Yes ! You buy everything in the world to project your own image !

If nothing will be achieved out of this tour, surely UAE government will be boosting their tourism and visa sales (which do come with a price). Don't tell me there will be a lot to be achieved, UAE has already burnt her hands by investing in RE and Telecom sector in the past - I don't think any amount of Modi's convincing will make them return. If at all investment comes, it got to be from Indians in UAE, none other !

How much was the cost of a ticket to enter stadium anyway ? Can anybody put it here ? Not all the seats were occupied but the TV announcer said there were people still waiting at the entrance. Who were they ? Labours who could not afford a ticket ? I wish to know know.

Assuming all tickets sold, what could be the collection and who gains out of it ? What is exchequers' contribution ?

    Heights of jealousy..

-TV channels aired Indian PM's speech.... not some useless pappus speech.
-Firstly sanjeev kapoor is not new to Dubai... Hes owning chains of restaurants in uae..
    -Tickets were absolutely free
-Seats near n behind the podium were not allowed to occupy for security reasons.... managing such heavy crowd was not an easy task for Dubai police.
-Gates closed by 6.30pm n people had to return home.

looks like u didnt find any fault in Modis speech... so picked also these silly issues to criticize him.

Anyways I m happy, even tho u hate him so much.. u followed his 2 day trip so closely n watched entire programme on tv..... haha...

Excellent speech but I have a few observations:

    1. Crowd cannot be 50,000 because few stands were empty.

Answer: Stands were empty in the rear side of the stage (common sense). And, people were seated on the ground (few thousand).

    2. Ideas are good but implementation is poor.

Answer:I'm not a BJP voter. But guys, please give Modi some time. Let us review him after 3-4 years (well before the next election). If he is bad for the country, voters are not fools anymore!

    3. Crown Prince has given land in Abu Dhabi for a temple, will you reciprocate.

Answer: India is a secular country with every kind of place of worship this planet can offer. And even if Modi does not reciprocate, it is our "Fundamental Right". We can have it!

    4. Indians have become victims of terrorism only after BJP demolished Babri Masjd.

Answer: The demolition was very very very unfortunate. However, this cannot be singled out. I have a bad feeling: Tiger Memon will surely respond to Yakub's hanging. Hope our security battery is vigilant.

Now that you have roamed the world and seen for yourself the thousands of temples all across the Western worlds, and now land to build your temple. See for yourself how the peoples from around the world treat people in general and Hindus in particular.

Hence, could you allow the minorities in India live in peace and practice their faiths? Can't we ask for something reciprocal? Could we see a full STOP to attacks on places of worship like a Mosque, Church, etc?

True identity. So you mean to say to qualify and prove myself and be a part of your clan, I have to resort to words like 'feku' , 'pappu' etc. Sorry wrong guy.

Clan has nothing to do with it. It is the comments which have a strong parachute chhadi flavour to it that reveals everything.
That exposes the guy ! ha, ha !

    Hi Henry,

nice speech by Feku in Delhi too :

    By Rupam Jain Nair
NEW DELHI (Reuters) - After Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's reforms agenda got blocked in parliament, people in his camp were hoping the famed orator will use a key Independence Day speech to renew confidence in his leadership.
    They were disappointed.

This is tight slap on Congress. Mr. Modi is hero. He met rulers of UAE, business community, labourers and mini India that is Dubai. This visit is historic and many good things on the way due to this visit. Jai Hind.
