Three-year-old suffocates as mother tries to stop her crying

Bengaluru, Aug 18, DHNS : An indigent young woman accidentally smothered her dengue-stricken three-year-old daughter by keeping her hand on the child’s mouth for long so as to stop her crying.

Naziya Sultana, a resident of Veerannapalya, KG Halli, had no money to spend on the treatment of her daughter, Rubiya Kousar, who was diagnosed with having dengue a month ago. On the evening of August 14, the child started crying. Sultana didn’t know what to do and, in a state of utter helplessness, she too started sobbing.

As the child’s cries grew louder, Sultana got frustrated and tightly closed the child’s mouth with her hand.

A while later, the child stopped crying but Sultana kept sobbing. It took her a while to realise that the girl had become motionless. The child had quietly died.

Sultana was so broke that she didn’t have the money to bury Kousar.

She sneaked the body out of her home and dumped it near Rahmaniya Masjid at Veerannapalya. She then came back home. Some time later, local residents spotted the body and called the police.

Police then uploaded the child’s photograph on their website and circulated pamphlets.
Some local residents came forward to identify the child and told the police about Sultana, an officer said.

When police questioned her, she narrated the whole story and how Kousar had suffocated.

Sultana had married Asif Ahmad, an auto-rickshaw driver, against her family’s wishes four years ago.

Ahmad’s family had opposed the alliance too. A year into the wedding, Sultana gave birth to Kousar. Soon after the child was born, the couple began quarrelling over petty issues.

A year ago, Ahmed deserted her and she stared staying alone. She took up a job at a private clinic.

Sultana has been booked for causing death due to negligence under section 304 (A) of the IPC and sent to jail.

And we say..." Ache Din Ayeghe", No never, we will never grow up.. " We need people in the society like Mother Theresa, who are role model by their action, not by their speech and falls promises ...this dirty politics, and politician never do any thing that will aid the benefit of society and people, they do the things which help them to win the next election.(I am not pointing any particular party) And we believe them and follow as our role models " we really don't know what is our basic needs and what our society need as a minimum... "change will never come until we bring change in our thinking, our actions". may god grant we all Indians the wisdom that we required to think in this angle!!!!

Very sad and heart moving. RIP our little Angel.

We are all touched when such tragedies occur and as we all agree that something needs to be done, but quite frankly what is really being done, besides lip service? Little or nothing.

How could this "man" (her husband) just walk away? Doesn't he have a responsibility as he was the one who fathered her child, and apparently is not providing child support? Since this comes under Muslim personal law, the Muslim community MUST enact laws that would force him to pay up. I understand Muslims must pay Zakat, could some money go toward these causes in the community. If they can’t then can all community (or communities) and philanthropic organizations like Lions or Rotary clubs do something about it. For example in the US and all over the West the government provides accommodation, the Churches run free food kitchens (very similar to the Sikh Langar’s), the pharmaceutical companies donate many millions of dollars of free medicine and doctor’s donate their time. Many millions of refugees from the ME in particular and all over the world take advantage of these free services.

Lastly, the government should have teeth and enforce strong laws that protect woman, children, the vulnerable and defenceless members of our society. Daijiworld reported it, but only the good Lord know how many times this has happened before and worse how many times more it is going to happen and while so many grieve on what it happening, for the rest of humanity it is business as usual.

Very very sad. In a fundamental right to live provided by the constitution has been violated by the government here for not providing the basic health care to the needy family. Unfortunately our media & intellectuals have other priorities. Death has become a news, but the not the predicament of a needy family when the child is alive. Sincerely hope the judiciary & law enforcement takes an humanitarian view in this case!

What a pathetic state ? Now, don't book the mother, but book her husband who deserted her and the child. It should be noted that the woman is working in a clinic, in order to feed herself and the child. Shouldn't she too have deserted the child and walked off ? Wake up India, legal system of India and wake up people of India.

If at all there will be a march in support of this lady, I will leave all priorities and participate in it !

Don't produce kids for others to take care ,if you have the ability to nurture them them have children better safe than sorry, theses days though children are working hard they are not fitting anywhere so I suggest if you have children its solely your responsibility it's the rule of life, even for animals too. I don't mind disagrees as long as you have read it. Coz if not today you will realise it soon. When we run out of water and food .

This is a very sad case. The woman has lost so much. I feel sorry for her.

However, I don't think it is proper to blame a man the moment a woman suffers. Yes, that is the way society seems to react in every instance, but it is not proper - without taking into account the circumstances of their separation.

Instinctively women want to have children as soon as they are married, whether there is food at home or not.

But after the delivery, many women go into depression. Some women do not seem to come out of that depressed mind. A lack of money and food adds to the misery. The man is now forced to feed three mouths.

The depression in the women can become verbal violence and mental torture for the man. What if the man can take only so much? Women should be taught by their parents not to torture their husbands!

So don't always blame the man. The torture towards the men by the society has become so much that, I won't be surprised if most young men will avoid getting married altogether.

A helpless mother did not know what to do and I do not think she has any intention of killing the child. Now the authorities have booked her under the section and have sent to jail. Did anyone ever give a thought of the dilemma she was going thru ?? she has not money to treat her child and she tried to console the child by keeping her hand on its mouth. Since she is weak she got booked and jailed. People could have helped her with some money and treat the child. I dont think she has done anything criminal as she had no intentions of killing the child. Of course as a mother she should not have dumped the body of the child which is wrong. She should have addressed this to the neighbours who would have surely helped her. May the child's soul rest in peace and find the culprit husband who left her helpless.

    A very sad incident indeed.
We cannot blame entirely on mother.
It's not a case of due negligence.
How many homes in India..still do not have money to lead a decent life.
Where is all our Billionaires..who spot only on Forbes List.
A new government should make plan for poor people who are below poverty line..with the help of 'Mohaal Committe'.
Many more NGO's should come forward in this regard.
Should not utilise such money by other's by any means.

Here,we lost precious life of a child and you are trying to politisise the issue. Very mean of you.
Women are exploited specially less educated. There should be women body to help those ladies who are in need of help because this poor lady is scared to go to police or any help from neibhour. Husband should be booked and woman's mental condition should be checked since she dumped her own child.
