Kundapur, Aug 18: Representatives of Mahila Mattu Makkala Mitraru in the taluk and members of Mookambika Mahila Mandala Taluk Okkoota on Tuesday August 18 held a protest in front of Kundapur Mini Vidhana Saudha opposing the proposed shifting of women's police station to Udupi, the district centre.

The women police station in Kundapur is the only one for the entire Udupi district, and now plans are afoot to shift it to Udupi city.

Opposing the proposed move, Mahila Mattu Makkala Mitraru activist and Beejadi gram panchayat member Ravindra Dodmane said that the police station in Kundapur has been convenient for women in rural areas. "When women in rural areas hesitate to register complaints even in the taluk police station, it is not correct to shift the only women police station to the district centre. If the plan to shift the police station is not dropped, we will resort to large scale protests," he warned.

Devi of Makkala Mattu Mahila Mitraru, Golihole said that exploitation of women and children are increasing these days. "In such circumstances, it is not feasible to shift the police station. On the contrary, more women police stations should be opened in the rural areas in order to boost the confidence of women and give them more security."

The protestors also held a rally from Shastri circle to Mini Vidhana Soudha.

A memorandum was submitted to the chief minister through the Kundapur assistant commissioner. All the members of Mahila Mattu Makkala Mitraru units from all the panchayats in the taluk participated in the protest.
