Mangaluru: Former rector of St Aloysius College Fr Ronnie Prabhu no more

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru
With Inputs from Fr Francis Almeida and Brian Fernandes

Mangaluru, Aug 18: Fr Ronnie Prabhu, former rector of city's St Aloysius College, passed away on Tuesday August 18 at St Philomena Hospital in Bengaluru due to cancer. He was 75.

Born on April 9, 1940 at Kodialbail in Mangaluru, Fr Ronnie Prabhu studied at St Aloysius College and joined the Society of Jesus in 1957. He was a brilliant student who always secured distinction, and even bagged a gold medal in his masters degree in philosophy which he completed from Dharwad University. He joined the Society of Jesus as he felt he was a 'pampered child of God', and felt that his life’s mission was to bring love, joy and peace into the hearts of the people.

He was ordained priest on February 23, 1970. He served as rector of St Aloysius College from 1980 to 1986, and during his tenure, he was intrsumental in establishing the St Aloysius Boys' Home and Industrial Technical Institute. In 1986, he took over as rector of St Joseph’s College, Bengaluru and from 1992 to 1998, he served as rector of Mount St Joseph College, Bengaluru.

From 1998 to 2004, he was the provincial of Karnataka Jesuits, during which he initiated the Jesuit Mission to Manvi in Raichur and Vijaypura. As the provincial he was instrumental in starting a CBSC school for the underprivileged in Raichur district which has now bloomed into a full fledged college. He served as director of Fatima Retreat House in Mangaluru.

He was appointed PRO of Archdiocese of Bengaluru three years ago, and at the time of his demise was serving as PRO of all the dioceses of Karnataka, the Karnataka Region Catholic Bishops' Council and the Karnataka Jesuits as well.

He was known for initiating inter-religious dialogue with Aashirvad centre for interfaith dialogue which he set up in 1970 and where conducted annual meets. He maintained excellent rapport with leaders of Lingayat and Okkaliga communities and also with Pejawar Swamiji, Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari Dr D Veerendra Heggade and religious heads of other faiths across the state of Karnataka. In his death the state has lost a champion of religious harmony.

Fr Ronnie was recently nominated for the IIPP Award for 'Outstanding Community Leaders of Mangaluru' which he was to receive sometime this year.

The funeral mass will be held on Thursday August 20 at 9 am at St Joseph's Boys' High School Chapel, Museum Road, Bengaluru. Soon after, the mortal remains will be taken to Mount St Joseph, Bannerghatta Road for burial.

deeply saddened by the news of the demise of a brilliant priest who I had the privilege of meeting on a few occasions in Mangalore during my many visits. His biography speaks volumes about the noble work Fr Ronnie Prabhu accomplished during his lifetime, down to the last few days. RIP. The journalist should have found a better picture of Fr. Prabhu who I found to be extremely handsome.

What a great loss. I regret that I didn't had time to visit him in December 2014. Great personality, very caring and kind. Always smiling and very charming. I was a student at St. Aloysius when he was the Rector and I also worked for him at the Retreat House. He had helped me a lot. May his soul rest in peace.

Ever since I entered St.Aloysius college I saw that beaming face which instilled positive attitude in me. He was a great teacher, inspiring and encouraging all the way! After my graduation, we happen to work together in an NGO Association for communal Harmony and moral uplift in which Fr. Ronnie Prabhu played an important role. He co-ordinated with various religious groups and always brought them together with his friendly gestures and graceful presence. His hearthrob for harmony and greater good of humanity is untiring. Personalities like him have made our nation great indeed!

Rest in peace Fr. Ronnie Prabhu. You have inspired and touched the hearts of so many people, irrespective of their background. You were always ever willing to listen, provide guidance and help everyone whom you knew, especially the poor. I knew Fr. Ronnie Prabhu when he was the rector at SAC and he had taken the members of AICUF to a camp at St. Aloysius Boys Home at Ullal. I still remember how he inspired the little children and gave them hope for their future. In Fr. Ronnie Prabhu, we have lost a great person and he will always be remembered for his service to humanity. May his soul rest in peace.

Rev Fr. Ronnie Prabhu was a very humble, honest, down to earth person, his death has greatly shocked me, he was very close to me, I had known him during my High School days, when he was a Rector at St. Aloysius College, after class I used to walk up to his room to get blessings, he was my mentor and guide, I personally invited him to my wedding and requested him to serve my nuptials mass along with many other priests at Milagres Church and later to attend my wedding reception, which he humbly obliged and did it for me, in spite of his busy schedule. I was blessed, then when my daughter was born, I requested him to attend my daughters baptism along with Bishop, and he was happy to do that, it is a great blessing to be baptized by such a humble priest, he used to visit my late parents when ever he found time.

Fr. Ronnie Prabhu has helped a lot of people, he was a great man, a wonderful priest.
I thank and praise our loving Lord Jesus for the gift of Fr. Ronnie Prabhu a good and faithful servant of God. His life of love and dedicated service in the Lord's vineyard.
My heartfelt sympathies to his family, relatives, near & dear ones.
Gone too soon, but will be never forgotten, he will live in our hearts for ever,
Rest in peace (RIP) Rev Fr. Ronnie Prabhu.

A real gem of Mangalore. Although I don’t know him personally, I have been following his activities during his days as the rector of St Aloysius College. I remember vaguely having seen him travelling on the bus to Kotekar a few times during the mid-to-late 80s ostensibly to supervise the Ashram the diocese ran there. I do also remember some of my primary school mates at Stella Marys Primary School used to stay in the Ashram then. But more than anything, I remember Father Prabhu as one of the pioneers of communal harmony in the region. Father Prabhu, along with my father late Ibrahim Sayeed and Ratan Kumar Kattemar were instrumental in setting up a inter-religious group in Mangalore called Association for Communal Harmony and Moral Upliftment. The association used to conduct public meetings on the occasion of all the three major festivals of India (Deepavali, Eid and Christmas) and bring scholars across religions to share their thoughts on harmony and peace. It’s really sad that such a body met a premature death for lack of support and enthusiasm from general public. At a time when religion is become a tool for division and hatred, it is essential that we revive the spirit of tolerance and amity, which I reckon will be the greatest tribute to the departed soul.

18th August is the feast day of Jesuit Saint Albert Hurtado. Exactly 9 years back on August 18, 2006, Jesuit scholastic Loy Manohar Fernandes was demised (drowned in Chennai) and on the same day and around the same time our dear Jesuit stalwart and former Provincial Fr Ronnie Prabhu left for Heavenly abode who led a simple life. I thank God for giving the Society such a person with multiple qualities. He was generous in all ways - helping, giving, encouraging, smiling, speaking without caste and creed, rich or poor. Indeed it was really a pleasure to work under him. I have not come across such a priest in my life. May his noble soul rest in peace.

I was one of the luckiest to work with him in his early mission at ASHIRVAD from 1975 to 1979. He loved us all so much and took care of us. I became a better christian only because of him. His excellent preaching and guidance was always very influential on people. Never ever neglected anyone who came to see him. Always smiling and willing to help. I have so much to talk about him and this place and space will not be enough. I will cherish the pleasant memories of my days with him and with Ashirvad always.

one of "THE BEST PERSON" whom i met in my life is "Fr. Ronnie Prabhu".
i was shocked on the first day that he is suffering from cancer, and i used to call and speak to him...
when i called him for the last time i could not control my tears,
but he calmed me and said "young man, why you cry ... i am happy and healthy... but pray for the mankind that they may not suffer from this particular illness".
he was ever charming and ever smiling priest ...
he had no partiality with poor and rich ...
once he knows a person he used to identify them immediately..
i still remember in last November i met him in Kross at bangalore ... he was celebrating mass... after the mass he removed his mass cloths and rushed towards me and and spoke... how come you are here ?
    he never underestimated any...
he is a true worthy jewel priest
    ..
i pray to god grant him the eternal rest .... and bless such many priests on this earthly planet

RIP Fr Ronnie ... you will be always alive in my eyes.
    RIP

Father Ronnie Prabhu - a loving soul - loved by all those he came in contact with. His passing away has left a void in the hearts of many - more so in the hearts of all my family members.

I had the privilege of knowing Father Ronnie very well for the past several decades. All my family members considered him as a part of the household. After his re-location to Bangalore he never failed to visit my wife Irene and me whenever he came to Mangalore. When he went on work to North America I had the privilege of having him over at three of the houses of my children - Lorna and Peter Pinto - Margaret and Franco Gonsalves and Michelle and Michael Mathias. He was termed a charmer because he charmed every one in company.

As a rector of St. Aloysius - he was greatly responsible to take the institution to greater heights... as a Provincial of The Jesuit Mission he tried and explored possibilities of getting into remote areas to spread the mission. Thanks to Max Rasquinha he is an international awardee for community leadership and for being an outstanding person. I spoke with Max in Houston just now and he had no words to explain the kind of a person Father Ronnie has been all along. recall with nostalgia our memorable drive from Detroit to New York where we went to attend the APNA meeting with Father Oswald Mascarenhas.

I cannot help feeling THE EMPTINESS in my heart as I think of Father Ronnie. MAY HIS SOUL REST IN PEACE.

Fr.Ronney Prabhu was great human being with his mesmerizing smile and warm gestures towards all. I use to interact with him when he was rector of Saint Aloysius College Mangalore. Him, Ratan Kumar Kattemar and Late Editor of Sanmarga Weekly Ibrahim Sayeed during those days formed an association called ' Association for communal harmony' in Mangalore and were striving to bring understanding among various faiths. Fr. Ronney prabhu was very broad-minded person. Today when communal frenzy is growing in Mangalore such individuals and such efforts are need of the hour. When I was writing these words, I saw comments only by Christians towards the departed soul and none others, which prompted me to write these lines. While expressing tribute to people like him we have to raise above religious lines. People like him deserves tribute from all.

Fr Ronnie Prabhu SJ (1940-2015) was a wonderful Jesuit Priest, a cheerful giver. A wonderful person loved and respected everyone irrespective of age, class, colour, religion or caste. There was warmth in the person which inspired everyone. Children loved to get his special blessing, Youth longed for his attention, and even elders came to meet Fr Ronnie wherever he moved.
A holy priest who practiced what he preached, 'How Lucky I am!!' was his mantra of gratitude and he wished all to be grateful to God and one another. He was a simple Jesuit generally used to travel by KSRTC semi-sleeper, worked hard day and night! (A man with high thinking and simple living suits him). Last year I visited along with him so many families in Mangaluru when we needed their help for our special mission.
Thank you Fr Ronnie for being an inspiration and a blessing to so many people.
May your life inspire all Jesuits, priests and laypeople to “Serve with Love” with a broad smile...!

He himself has been an outstanding peak among several mountain tops, as he always inspired youngsters to be. Quite often he forgot names of people because he knew too many of us. "Death comes like a thief" is just a saying but some times it appears like a real thief in our life. Just three days ago I took the pleasure and honor to Fr. Ronnie Prabhu as one o the proud recipient of the "Outstanding Community Leader for the year 2014/2015. Just yesterday I sent a message to Fr. Denzil Lobo requesting him to provide me the e.mail address of Fr. Ronnie in order to officially inform him of the as the "Outstanding Leader of the Community". When Fr. Denzil Lobo told me that he is not too well and that he is gone to the hospital, I even sent him a message that even if Fr. Ronnie may not be able to come to Mangalore to receive the Trophy I shall fly to Bangalore for one day and present to him the Trophy and the cheque personally. Before the day is over it is sad that Fr. Ronnie is no more. Fr. Ronnie was my classmate at St. Aloysius. He was a bright, in fact the brightest student in the class. He has been a very lively and capable student. We had a Parliament in the School and Fr. Ronnie Prabhu was the Prime Minister and I was one of his Minister in the Cabinet. Very cheerful and enthusiastic individual. What a great loss to the Jesuits and to the Community as well as the country.

The Crystal Trophie that has been ordered in the name of Fr.Ronnie duly engraved with his name will still come forward, and his presence at the presentation ceremony some time during the latter part of this year will still be carried forward. The cheque for his Leadership Award will be delivered to the St. Aloysius young students Band at Beeri in the name of late Fr. Ronnie.

God is so merciful and kind that Fr.Ronnie gave so much to our Community and Society and he will be long remembered. May he rest in peace. Thank you, Fr. Ronnie for all your dedication to life. Please remember us from heaven.

Sorry to hear the demise of Fr. Ronnie Prabhu. A big loss to the Church in General and Jesuits and the students at large in Particular! I heard of him when he was the Rector of the college. A good and learned priest. Heartfelt sympathies to the Jesuits . Also God may give him eternal rest in heaven and the strength to the family for the great loss.

The Jesuits have lost a stalwart. He was such a committed man, deeply human and giving us all glimpses of the divine... He dedicated himself to bring peace and harmony among all peoples of goodwill... He had built bridges between communities and has always striven for inter religious harmony.... Fr. Ronnie, you will continue to live in our hearts... May your soul rest in peace.

Fr. Ronnie was a true Jesuit and a loving human being. He had a spontaneous smile and was joy to be around. I have worked with him, he always brought an air of freshness when ever he walked in. My heart is filled with sadness as I am going to miss a true friend and mentor. He will surely be missed by his students, colleagues and Jesuits at large. His work with inter religious groups was really commendable which brought peace among communities.
FR. RONNIE WE ALL WILL MISS YOU. YOU WILL SURELY KEEP YOURSELF BUSY MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN HEAVEN.
