Cochin becomes world’s first solar-run airport

Cochin, Aug 19 (PTI) : Kerala’s Cochin International Airport Ltd (CIAL) has become the first airport in the world that would be running fully on solar power. The airport officially commissioned a 12 MW solar project on Tuesday.

The state’s chief minister Oomman Chandy commissioned the project constructed on 45 acres near the cargo complex of the airport. The project was executed by Bosch Ltd at a cost of Rs.62 crore in about six months.

Once in operation, the project is estimated to generate about 50,000 units of electricity daily. This, coupled with an an existing 1 MW solar plant commissioned in 2013, which was upgraded from a 100 KW plant set up in the same year, will be enough to meet all power requirements of CIAL, said an airport spokesperson.

In fact, CIAL expects the plant to generate more power than what is required for the airport. It has entered into a pact with the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB), the state-run utility, for feeding power produced from the station to the power grids of the board. The power would be brought back from the board as per the requirements of the airport and any additional power would be sold to KSEB.

Based on installed capacity, CIAL is the largest project which has been executed by the Bosch Energy and Building Solutions team in India till date, said Steffen Berns, president of Bosch Group India and managing director Bosch Ltd in a press statement.

CIAL director A.C.K. Nair said switching to green energy is almost equivalent to planting 3 million trees or not driving 750 million miles, as the airport would be able to cut carbon-dioxide emission from coal-powered power plants by 3 lakh tonnes over the next 25 years.

Sixteen years into operation, CIAL was the first airport to be constructed in public-private-partnership model in the country. It is also the only airport company that has handled more than five million passengers in a year in Kerala, as per its annual results reported in 2015.

The airport also plans to tap more into the green energy sector in Kerala, a state that has no lack of vast natural resources and has suitable weather conditions to harness renewable energy. CIAL has already floated a proposal before the government to construct floating solar power plants on the water bodies of the state.

Contradictions is the name of the game - One airport in Jaisalmer built at a cost of 50 Million has not a single flight landed in the last 2 years and another airport in Kochi has gone to the other extreme of becoming the first solar powered airport. Speaks volumes of the government in the respective states. Well done Kochi.

"It has been acknowledged over the years that solar panels work best during the day when the sun is out and unobstructed. At nighttime and during the winter season, less sunlight reaches the panels and converts to energy. The good news is that there really is no need to fret in most cases, since solutions are out there. If power is needed at night or on those winter days, energy can be conserved by utilizing a utility grid or a battery bank"

    Dr.Shankarnarayan

As I said before there will be more cheap flights from Kannur than M'Lore, beneficial for coastal NRIs from GCC,

secondly, foreign students, tourists can reach Kannur by Fly Bus, cheap and fast, instead of reaching BIA by fly bus which takes too long, too expensive, and also catch connecting flights at Dubai to most of the world.

M'Lore leaders do not lobby for the benefit of coastal area, you must remember first.

    Anand,
    Dr.Shankaranarayan,

As of now there are so many trains plying between M'Lore/Kannur which is also an added advantage for those on shoe string budget!!

Kannur airport is a boon to both Coastal region and Kannur folks who were depending on expensive flights from M'Lore, not to mention the need to travel to M'Lore by road or rail.

I don,t think so that Kerala flights are cheaper. Now most of the keralites who are in Kannur and kasargod District prefer Mangaluru Airport than calicut Airport. One thing its not cheaper as you think and second is service best in Mangaluru airport.I repeat service rendered by Mangaluru Airport is the Best. I have landed in all these Kerala Airports. But I find Mangaluru the best.

    Dr.Shankaranarayan,
Am just writing the information collected from various sources about Kannur air port:
Mangalore airport is built on a small parcel of land, having runway of only 8,000,compared to KIA's 2,000 acre land with 11,000 ft which is safer.
Lots of new roads and a railway station at KIA itself is planned for easy access, plus so many plus points.
The reason why I mentioned KIA is not for comparing with MIA, but for the benefit of those taking fly bus from Udupi/Mangalore to BIA, which in my opinion is not practical, if one were to chose KIA instead for the reasons I mentioned.

You may feel comfortable at MIA instead of Calicut, is a different issue al together.

About cheap flights, my assumption is based on the lobbying, and other factors, that will attract people to fly to Kannur instead of M'Lore.

Besides the taxi mafia, Currently there isn't even a decent access road to Mlore airport for the benefit of coastal people.

Even people from Kundapur can reach Kannur in less than 4 hours by Fly Bus, when NH 66 is completely operational.

JAI ADANI IN KERALA! - Twenty five years after it was conceived, and amid the CPM led opposition's chorus of having sold out to predatory capitalists, the government of Kerala finally inked the historic concession agreement with Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd on Monday for construction and development of the Rs 7,525 crore project.
The construction of the port would begin on November 1, and Gautam Adani, chairman of Adani Group, promised to complete the project within 1,000 days, a gesture that Congress Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said the state eagerly looked forward to.
