Bobby Fischer's circumstances defined him: Tobey Maguire

Los Angeles, Aug 26 (IANS): Actor Tobey Maguire, who will portray legendary chess champion Bobby Fischer in his next film titled "Pawn Sacrifice", has shared that Fischer's circumstances defined him.

The story revolves around Fischer's 1972 match with Russian chess grandmaster Boris Spassky whom he defeated to capture the World championship.

"Bobby’s circumstances defined him. During a lonely childhood, he built confidence by playing chess obsessively. For him, chess was a search for truth. He knew he was really good and he was competing at a fairly high level. But he wasn’t a natural. He had an aptitude for it, but he got that good largely through hard work,” Maguire said in a statement.

Directed by Edward M. Zwick -- of “Legends of the Fall” and “Blood Diamond” fame who is well known for his in-depth and detailed portrayal of complex characters and social issues -- “Pawn Sacrifice” is set in the Cold War era which covers the battle of strategies during the 1972 World Chess Championship.

Being released on September 18 by PVR Pictures, the movie also features Liev Schreiber ("X-Men Origins: Wolverine") as Boris Spassky.
