Mangaluru, Aug 26: City police commissioner S Murugan on Wednesday August 26 said that 13 persons have been arrested for stripping and assaulting a man after tying him up to an electricity pole at Attavar in full public view on August 24.

Addressing a press meet at his office here, Murugan said that the 13 have been produced in court, remanded in judicial custody till September 7, and sent to Ballari jail.

He did not give the names of the accused arrested, but answering questions from the media, said that some of them belong to Bajrang Dal, one to VHP and some are not affiliated to any outfit.

He also said that except for one, identified as Kishan, none of them have any criminal track record. Kishan was involved in a petty case, he added.

"We arrested 13 accused after examining WhatsApp images, posts on Facebook and other social media, phone calls, CCTV footages and information from reliable sources. We have collected several proofs," he said.

He also said that police are looking for seven others, who include the accused and those who supported the assaulters.

The male victim's oral statement has been taken and case has been registered on charges of rioting, attempt to murder, dacoity and threat to life, Murugan said.

"On the day of the incident, as soon as they got information, the Pandeshwar police rushed to the spot without wasting any time. The male victim left the supermarket at 5.27 pm, the girl left at 5.34 pm, at 5.47 pm they had a conversation, and between 5.52 pm and 6.10 pm, he was assaulted. The police reached the spot within 5-10 minutes," the commissioner said.

"This incident has triggered panic among the public. It is a blemish, and hence the police have taken up this case very seriously. We will take measures to prevent such incidents in future, and we need public support," he added.

Asked if action would be taken against those who circulated the pictures of the incident in WhatsApp and other social media, he said, "We are investigating the matter and it will take time. When pictures go viral on social media it is difficult to find out the exact origin."

To another query, he said the girl involved in the case came late to the police station and her statement has been video-recorded.

"We have collected enough material on the incident and I assure that there will be truthful, honest and sincere investigation into the case.

"There may be many theories floating in the media, but I cannot comment on them. We are sincerely working to protect the rights, privacy and dignity of individuals. We will arrive at the truth," he assured.

Asked if the attack was pre-planned as alleged by some, he said, "It was not systematically pre-planned, but there were some plotters."

About the girl's allegation that the male victim had tried to pull her inside the car, he declined to comment saying its part of the investigation.

"It is our endeavour and desire that such incidents are prevented. We have tried to prevent such incidents and whenever any such thing has occured we have taken strict action without wasting time. If one incident has taken place, 10 have been prevented," he added.

"Police can only work within the ambit of law and action also will be taken within the purview of law," he said.

Though the names of the accused, except Kishan's, were not revealed in the press meet, it is reliably learnt that the arrested are Santhosh Poojary (23) of Karkala, Bhujanga Shetty (26) of Bantwal, Chandrakanth Rao (42), a resident of Bejai, Naveen (42), a resident of Melinamogaru, and Attavar residents Abhiram alias Abhi (23), Kiran (29), Praveen Shetty (29), Ghanshyam Acharya (24), Dhanush (20), Muthuraj (21), Kishan (20), Vivek (38) and Kiran Kumar (25). Muthuraj is originally from Gadag, Praveen hails from Karkala and Kiran from Kundapur.

Among them, Chandrakanth Rao is a VHP worker while Santhosh, Kiran, Bhujanga, Dhanush, Kishan and Naveen belong to Bajrang Dal while Vivek is the treasurer of Hindu Yuva Sene. The rest do not belong to any fringe outfit.

Can we expect justification will be done? One man was harrasing a girl for many days as per the girls statement...a s per the law girls statement carries more weight. This topic has been given coomunal colour. Even some leaders try to impress the vote bank. other media also so far publish half story only . The fault of the girl is she is hindu? Even this news given to pakistani media too. Few days back same story happened but no coverage ..because in that case the boy was hindu and the girl is muslim. .WHy double policy.

It is clearly evident from the initial pictures circulated through WhatsApp that the girl herself was ashamed of the whole incident and came to the rescue of the boy but was forcibly prevented by the culprits. It was her natural humanity which did not endorse what was going on.

Next day however, the goons were successful in orchestrating a different story through the girl which is quite obvious. Who wins here is immaterial but the humanity has certainly suffered. Henceforth people will have to think 10 times, when the neighbours house is set on fire, before extending any help.

    Respected PC,
This is what we, the civilized and law abiding citizen required from the police department. People would be panic and life would be in danger in the hands of such goondas in the society. Today, they have done such nasty things in the public and if not controlled such guys may kill someone in public. That shows how our BD, VHP and religious extremists are behaving. We are not in the jungle rule of Right wing extremists. Let them correct their home/family members first and start worrying about the world.
Also, issue warning to the organizations which support such immoral, criminal activities in the name of culture and religion.

Why Police commissioner wants to take legal action against the people who uploaded the pictures of Goondaism on Facebook & Whatsapp ?
In fact it is because of these photos the Assaulters could be precisely identified and arrested. Moreover this will be a crucial evidence in the court against the Goons. Otherwise their lawyer would have argued that the goons did not physically beat the victim but they only caught hold of the man and handed him over to police. In 90 % of such cases the goons escape from the law in the Court with the help of such concocted story and police do not have in evidence to prove otherwise. But in this attavara case goons cannot escape in court as people have provided concrete proof in Facebook & Whatsapp.

    No Politics plss...

Sad everybody is commenting but nobody exchanges any solution :(

Its high time religious leaders sit together and neutralize issues.

Politicians have always been for their voters.

Police can punish as per law, but cannot avoid such confrontations.

May it be moral policing, conversion, cattle theft. People involved are from age group of 18-35.

With reconciliation society can lead peaceful life.

Our unity has always been in its diversity.

    Please dont spread hate.

Religious leaders can not do much ....It is the Parents / Family members who have to study and practice Moral Science in all the fields of Life.....
Regarding cattle theft, is it taking place in the cow sheds or in grazing lands...No one has the courage to steal the cattles from the cow sheds.... If the thefts take place, any one can be involved...I know , many BD goons are supplying cattles in the village market.... It is the duty of the owners to see that the cattles do not overstep in others compounds and eat /finish off all the greenery available.....Then what will be the pain of the owners, if the greenery in their compounds are eaten by stray cattles...

But this is one has gone to its extreme. unless there is strong action it will be repeated. Any one who has common sense will agree that girl gave statement on others instructions as she used to travel in his car. Whoever guilty has to be punished. Let the law take its course of action.

Please dont continue your bias here as well.....If the girl was harrassed, the report on DW also said the girl was slapped by the attackers for coming to the rescue of her male colleague. If she was harassed, she would not go to defend him. She is certainly not innocent as you think. Moreover, why are we so much touchy about our religion and caste? Do the citizens of India have no right to chose what they want and be responsible for their decisions? Do we have no police if they do any wrong in the eyes of the law? Why do we become suddenly nervous if a boy and a girl belonging to different religions talk to each other or even date each other? Why don't we learn to mind our business?

If they reached 5 to minutes to the spot how then people tie up the victim within short period. That means police has seen everything front of thier own eyes and pretend like nothing has happened. Moral police and civil police has affiliation or joint venture to deal men and women or husband and wife whom to go with whom and where when how etc. Is it dictatorship of life in mangalore controlled by moral and civil police department. A 22 year old boy organized lakhs of Patel Hindu community to confront against the corrupt and partial system. Similarly the Muslims, the Christians and the Dalits in this region too are becoming restless and that is not a good trend for the society. The unrest will cripple the economy of this region. Hence the politicians, both Congress and BJP along with the police and the judiciary should act before it is too late. Jai Hind!

Those who are not involved in any other cases earlier, punish them in jail for a certain period and release them.

The one who has involved in previous cases also, should be booked in Goonda case and need punishment at least 7 years in jail.

This is my opinion and suggestion.
