Bengaluru: K J George condemns Mangaluru assault case, says govt won't tolerate 'moral policing'

From Our Special Correspondent
Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Aug 26: Karnataka Home Minister K J George has come down heavily against the latest episode "moral policing" in the coastal city of Mangaluru.

"Nobody will be allowed to take law into their hands in the name of ‘moral policing’," the minister said while talking to reporters in Bengaluru on Wednesday.

George said: "Our government will not tolerate any acts of ‘moral policing’ in any parts of the State. We will take stern action against all those indulged in ‘moral policing."

The Mangaluru City police swung into action and arrested 13 persons.

The police have been directed to maintain zero tolerance towards ‘moral policing’ in coastal region, which has been witnessing such cases for the past few years, George said.

In a suspected incident of moral policing, a 28-year-old man was stripped and assaulted in full public view by members of fringe right-wing outfits for being with a girl of another community in Mangaluru.

But the girl alleged that she was being harassed by the man who also 'misbehaved' with her and claimed that she was in fact rescued from him by the group.

Mangalore had a name and used to be recognized as peaceful l and cultured people’s place.
There used to be some skirmishes or minor fights among petty gangs but overall situation wasn't that terrific like the communal attitude of today. I left Mangalore in 1975 but till that time I never heard about Bajrangdal or Right-wing activists. Now our place stands communally volatile and anti-community feelings. What a pity? People need to change and save our beloved Mangalore from the clutches of communally hatred ideology.

Mr. Home Minister, your statement that you don't tolerate moral policing is OK. But what action are you going to take on those who have erred and what is your action plan to prevent further moral policing. Your party is as much responsible for the communal disharmony in our country as your rival. Both - for that matter all political parties - don't hesitate to use communal tensions to garner votes. Please stop talking nonsense and start acting.

It is but common sense that when the Police Force is expected to control crimes, there is no question of MORAL POLICING.

Hope all concerned keep a close watch on the so called moral policing and that serious action will be taken on the perpetuaters of this kind of crime.

INDEED THERE SHOULD BE ZERO TOLERANCE on so called moral policing.

That story is laughable. First, the lady's press conference was organised in the BD office - so anydo we expect anything other than the BD version. Secondly, if the person had misbehaved in the past, why take lifts from him in the first place?
Then the girl says she went with him on her own but he pulled her into the vehivle? This is amusing, why should he pull her if she went on her own with him? Next she says she wasn't present durign the thrashing - but there is a video of her pleading to save the boy. An intelligent person will know who is responsible- but if you want to believe only the BD, then God help you
