Mangaluru makes it to list of Smart Cities

Daijiworld Media Network

Mangaluru/New Delhi, Aug 27: In a happy news for all Mangalureans and people of the coastal region of Karnataka, the Modi-led central government has chosen Mangaluru as among the 98 cities to be upgraded to Smart Cities.

The list of cities was announced by the union urban development minister Venkaiah Naidu on Thursday August 27.

Naidu said that Rs 2 crore would be released soon to prepare the blueprint for the Smart City project. In the next five years, Rs 100 crore would be released every year for each of the cities. Altogether, the project is being undertaken at a cost of Rs 48,000 crore, he said.

He further said that the "prime motive behind the smart city project is to enhance urban life".

Also, the state government too will release Rs 100 crore annually for the next five years for each of the cities selected for the project.

There were 13 parameters set by the ministry which included existing service level, past track record reforms, implementation of the Jawaharlal Nehru national urban renewal mission scheme and self-financing capacity among others.

Six cities had been nominated from Karnataka state and all have been chosen. They are, Mangaluru, Hubballi-Dharwad, Belagavi, Shivamogga, Tumakuru and Davanagere. These cities secured the highest scores in the competition, with Mangaluru topping the list with 96.88 percent.

Of those chosen for the project, 24 are capital cities, 24 are business hubs and 18 are cultural centres. Cities like Patna, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Thiruvananthapuram and Shimla have failed to make the cut in round one.

In the next five years, Rs 3 lac crore will be spent in developing the towns to provide world class infrastructure, sustainable environment and smart solutions.

Uttar Pradesh will have the highest number of smart cities (13) followed by Tamil Nadu (12), Maharashtra (10), Madhya Pradesh (7) and Karnataka and Gujarat 6 each. Punjab, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh each will have three smart cities.

Speaking to daijiworld, mayor Jacintha Alfred welcomed the decision and said, "It is a great news for us, but officially we have not received any information about it. Mangaluru will become famous and developmental projects will increase, and so also the budget. More companies will come to invest here."

MLA of Mangaluru South J R Lobo thanked the people who were responsible for it, including the city corporation which prepared the important report, district administration and all the elected representative. "With Rs 100 crore each year, the city would develop at a fast pace providing all opportunities to grow in all spheres. Mangaluru is blessed with port, road, rail and flight connectivity. We should be able to make the best of it to meet the demands of the people," he said.

It is a great achievement that Mangaluru has topped the list among all cities in Karnataka. With a lot more MNCs wanting to tap the upcoming cities, Mangaluru has increased its potential after getting nominated as a smart city. This will create a lot more jobs and Mangalureans will stay back their mother land and make it grow and prosper.

All the best to all involved in this initiative.

I fail to understand how Mangaluru will be transformed to a smart city. We already have high rise buildings everywhere with narrow roads. The infrastructure presently like drainage and water pipes were laid 40 years back which are grossly inadequate. how will the smart city planners address this problem which will need much more than 100 crores? Putting up some high speed data cables and calling it smart is outright idiotic.

Its really a good news in fact.

But all the huge amount will really be invested on such big projects?
Or Are we going to see Smart MLA /MP houses near Mangalore ?The matter to worry about.

First thing is Mangalore need proper infrastructure to hold the future traffic.once it becomes Smart.

    Second thing is Green Mangalore,

Third is Safety (No moral policing please. We already have our respected Mangalore Police-Hope it will become still more smarter)

fourth is Job Opportunities,The project itself is going to create lot of job opportunities,But "Reservation is again a problem here"

Fifth - Good Vacation spots & Sports Center

Sixth - Neat and Clean - Worship Places (this matters among us mangaloreans)

Seventh - Still more quality education (Introduce IIT students as lecturers/teachers so that at least 2-3 years they teach young generation,So that younger generation can become still smarter)

Eight - Cleaner beach A beach which produces Energy (which is now being wasted)

Ninth - Good Bus stands (Currently what we have is not at all good)

Tenth - We dont need moral policing but we need to induce moral values to our future generation-So that city will remain smart always.

Eleventh - Provide shelter to people with no basic necessities

Hope to see a More Cleaner,Greener & Smarter Namma Kudla

Mangalore has been famous for Moral Policing and the recent issue like the women attack has crossed all limits. So where does smartness come into picture. Just having smart city is not sufficient whether the mind, heart and talk is smart enough. Whether we are broad minded is the question of smartness. Mangalore is the hub of education and health but look at the few Idiots who try protect their culture in the name of religion. First learn to love human beings before loving god.

If peoples freedom is at the behest of some remote culture protectors how we can attract tourism, social gatherings & socialization etc. Smart City not only by skyscrapers, posh shopping malls and infrastructure. Chidambaram and Montek decide that if you earn Rs 32/- in urban and Rs 26/- in rural areas you are not poor. i.e. earning Rs 4,824 per month for a family of five - you are no more below the poverty line. See how clever Indian and the Indian Govt. are claimed Chidu & Montek. In 6 months we improved the economy so much that we lifted the entire population of Sweden, Denmark, Australia, New Zealand and Canada put together out of poverty.

Dear Respected PM. It is nice to learn from DW that Mangalore has been Chosen in the list of smart cities Project. I would be most grateful if you could first give our City the fundamental rights:
    1. Somewhat good roads
    2. Foot-paths for pedestrians
    3. Garbage bins with cleaning facilities
    4. 24 hours drinking water
    5. 24 hours electricity
    6. Public toilettes in certain Areas.
If we have all the Basic facilities, I am sure the People of Mangalore will make Mangalore a smart City. Majority of Mangalore citizens are educated and want their city to be no. 1 in India and they can prove this with-in 1 years time after you have provided
us with the above or use your powers as PM with the State Govt. in implementing our Basic requirements. Jai Hind. Jai Mangalore

How can we have a smart city in Mangalore as long as we have Monkey Army who will tie you up if you talk to a girl from your car?
First let us have a A4 size ID card which should be hanging on our neck with details showing,Name, religion,Vote for : Tick one of the following:BJP/RSS/BD/HJV/RS/ NA.
Confirmation Code: Say loudly, Jai shree Ram.
We are 100 years behind smart cities. We don’t deserve them as long as we tolerate this Monkey Bath Biryani.

The root is Love Jihad and this has to be stopped by all means. and there should be peace talk between communities understand the problem and provide the solution. Ok..Can we expect the following facilities in Mangalore? Or is it only good news for Builders who will immediately increase the prices..

    1. Theme Park – With high student population and settled families, this will be a great family & friend’s day out option. Wanderla are you listening?

2.Sports Arena – Whole of Mangalore cannot depend on Mangala Stadium or Nehru Maidan. We need few sports centres in different areas.

3.Picnic Centres - This need to be developed as a paid centre and maintained so that people can have family picnic. Apart from Pilicula region, I have not come across such places.

4.Beach Shacks: It is high time Govt looks into this aspect and give it to private investors. They have to maintain the cleanliness of the place and if they fail, cancel the licence. Goa type of shacks will surely boom the tourists here.

5.Go Karting: Mangalorean are great lovers of motor vehicles. An outdoor Go-Karting option in & around Mangalore can be a successful venture.

6.House Boats : We have enough back water spots and Kerala style house boats with affordable price tags can attract tourist as well the locals.

7.Aqua Marine Ocean Gallery: We should develop an Ocean Gallery showcasing the Indian Ocean fishes and a coral exhibit. This center should have an option to learn about marine life and discover the wonders of the ocean. This should be comparable to one in Bangkok, Cape Town or Dubai Aqua world. This can attract huge tourist inflows into our city. Instead of having one more huge mall in our city, I would rather have this in our city so that surrounding area also can be developed.

8.Udupi-Mangalore-Kasargod Metro Train: We may not need city metro, but if we can have metro train service between Udupi, Mangalore and Kasargod it will be a great travel option for the tourists & residents

You are welcome to add more...

just imagine a scene..... in park or sports arena or picnic center or in beach if boy speak with girl of different community,,,OMG ! then these BD's & Chaddees will vandalize all the place and will be empty plot. think how much of money will be wasted. again what will be budget to rebuild.
so why to build smart city in mangalore when chaddies are ready to destroy/vandalize.
