Lok Sabha Speaker to attend speakers' conferences in New York


New Delhi, Aug 27 (IANS): Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan will attend the 10th Annual Meeting of Women Speakers of Parliament and the Fourth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament to be held in New York from August 29 to September 2, an official said.

Lok Sabha Secretary General Anoop Mishra will be accompanying Mahajan.

The themes to be discussed in the annual meeting of women speakers include 'Democracy: Innovating for more gender inclusive decision making processes and bodies', 'Peace: Innovating to end violence against women and harmful practices, in particular in conflict situations' and 'Development: Innovating for financing for gender equality'.

Mahajan will make a presentation on the theme 'Development: Innovating for financing for gender equality'.

Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman P.J. Kurien will also attend the Fourth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament to be held from August 31 to September 2 and will be accompanied by Rajya Sabha Secretary General Shumsher K. Sheriff.

During the conference a general debate will take place on the theme "Placing Democracy at the Service of Peace and Sustainable Development, Building the World the People Want".

Reports will be presented from the panel discussions "Parliamentary oversight: Challenges and opportunities" and "Translating the SDGs into action".

The conference will culminate with the adoption of a final declaration.
