Mangaluru, Aug 27: MLC Ivan D'Souza on Thursday August 27 condemned the recent incident at Attavar where in Shabbir (name changed) was tied to a pole, stripped and assaulted by a mob of right-wing activists and others.
Addressing a press meet at the Congress office, Ivan said, "Ever since our government came to power we have been trying to curb this moral policing. The incident that occurred on August 24 is shameful. Such acts should not occur, no one should support or provoke such acts. Culprits should be caught and given severe punishment.
"According to the information given by police commissioner to the media, the 13 people arrested are from different places and belong to certain organizations. The question here is who has directed these people to carry out this act. This needs to be found out. The accused should be punished severely so that such an incident does not occur again. I have requested the district incharge minister and the home minister to direct the police to take strict action against the culprits. I thank the police department for taking quick action. I thank the people for not reacting wrongly to the incident. I have asked the home minister to conduct a review meeting also," Ivan said.
MUDA chairman Ibrahim Kodijal, mayor Jacintha Vijay Alfred, Kavita, Cyril D'Souza and others were present.
