Myanmar parliament adjourns ahead of election


Yangon, Aug 28 (IANS): Myanmar's Union Parliament Friday announced adjournment of its sessions to pave the way for the upcoming general election scheduled for November 8.

Parliament Speaker U Shwe Mann, at the closing session, urged maintenance of stability in the pre and post-election period, calling on contesting parties and candidates to abide by codes of conduct, Xinhua news agency reported.

Parliamentarian U Khine Maung Yi said that some remaining bills are to be dealt with when the session resumes after the election.

The present term of the legislative body will last until January 31, 2016, after which a new parliament will be produced through the November election.

The House of Nationalities (Upper House) adjourned on August 19, and the House of Representatives (Lower House) on August 27.
