Kundapur: Concerned at frequent cattle thefts, police issue stern warning to accused

Silvester D'Souza
Daijiworld Media Network - Kundapur

Kundapur, Aug 28: In the wake of increasing number of cattle trafficking cases in the taluk, the Kundapur police have decided to take measures to put a break on such cases. In an unexpected development, the police personnel, acting under the directions of district superintendent of police (SP) Annamalai, on Friday August 28 summoned about 15 persons having previous records of cattle thefts, and issued them stern warning against getting involved with similar cases.

(Photos blurred on request)

Since the monsoon set in, there has been a steady raise in the number of cattle thefts in the taluk. A number of families, which were dependent upon dairying activity for a living, were left high and dry because of these cattle thieves who clandestinely stole cows and other bovine animals during the nights. Most of these thefts have occurred in rural belts of the taluk, and the cattle so stolen get immediately transported to slaughterhouses. Hence, the animals go missing without a trace.
Although there have been occasional raids and cattle thieves have been nabbed, theft of cows has turned into a serious problem. The policemen, who sat up and took notice of this situation, gave a new twist to their style of operation.

About 15 persons from the taluk, who were involved with cattle thefts in the past, were asked to appear in the police station. They were questioned and sent back with strong warning, duly telling them that they would be required to provide surety from two persons for their release. At the same time, police will be keeping close watch on the movements of these persons.

With this act, both police circle inspector, Diwakar, and police sub-inspector, have sent a strong signal to the thieves that they will not be able to go Scot free after committing this kind of crimes. It is expected that the interrogation of people with previous records of thefts will provide a positive turn to the efforts being made to arrest cattle thefts. Dairy farmers all over the taluk have been frustrated at the illegal cattle trafficking and cattle thefts, and there have been occasions when entire cattle sheds were emptied by the thieves. The cows released to graze outside are sure to be stolen if the families are a little late in bringing them back to their homes in the evening. There is information that the stolen cattle reach slaughterhouses, and that beef commands high price in the black market.

Aged cows, bullocks, and bulls get sold for beef, and brokers operate at village level to conduct this business. They fix a rate and then convey information to cattle traffickers. It is said that at night the old cattle are delivered at a pre-determined spot. The people have expressed apprehension about the movement of people seen to be using Omni vans at night in deserted roads with torches in hands.

With the personal intervention of the district superintendent of police and the police department showing willingness to take on these thieves, there are hopes that more and more accused will get caught and the number of cattle thefts will fall steeply.

This is the report given by TIME- a popular international magazine in their April Edition:
"India has been the largest exporter of beef in the world since last year, and has further widened its lead over second-ranked Brazil with a projected total of 2.4 million tons exported in 2015 against Brazil’s 2 million."

Brazil exported the most beef in 2013 followed by India & Australia.

    Country in Tons 2013 %
    1 Brazil 1,849,000 20.17%
    2 India 1,765,000 19.26%
    3 Australia 1,593,000 17.38%
    4 USA 1,172,000 12.79%
    5 New Zealand 529,000 5.77%

    Times of India says
"NEW DELHI: The Narendra Modi government in its inaugural year has incurred a travel bill of Rs 317 crore, according to the revised budgetary estimates. This is about Rs 59 crore more than the Rs 258 crore the UPA-II cabinet had spent in its last year in office (2013-14), but in keeping with UPA's average spend on the head through its five year-term."

All the above are the available figures and facts. After Narendra Modi took over as PM in May 2014, apart from spending a whopping sum of money on his travel, the other biggest development the common man can see as per the above statistics is that he has put India on top of the beef exporters list beating Brazil by a big margin and bringing a clear 28% increase in beef exports since 2013.

We have our dear friends - the right wing activists doing everything to curb cow slaughter and ban beef and here we have the BJP led Union Government trying hard to keep India's No. 1 position of beef exports going steady.

Indians are not allowed to consume beef (includes cow, buffallo,ox) but the rest of the world can relish on Indian beef...

DOUBLE STANDARDS EXPOSED AT ITS HIGHEST LEVEL.....

Cattle theft is well fabricated story of chaddi parivar.Without proper confirmation the police department even should not believe it.otherwise the reason for moral policing continues.First of all raid on GOSHALAs and verify how that large number of cows they got and finally where it will reach. The answer will be sure Meat export factories.Cattle meat business is a backbone of chaddies now and police must look into that.Police department has to find out why only coastal region has problem with these silly third class issues

Stern warning to cattle thieves is good idea. At the same time stern warning should be given to the people who take law into their hands also while catching them, they can just inform police personnel that is enough. Further don't make criminals to become stick on to their job being professional thieves allow them to reform . After warning them they are sure that any cattle theft happens even if they are not involved they are the one to be caught First. Unemployment societal value system are the main cause for this disgust situation. Those high profile people who steal public money and makes hate speech are rewarded with honors and political power . On the other hand those petty thieves are used as pawn in the hands of police and meat merchants. It seems there is some kind of understanding between police , cattle thieves and the group which protects cattle. It is like drama whose script is pre planned. Eating habit is the part of culture consumption of beef pork chicken mutton vegetables anything is the choice of individual. Excessive meat consumption is not good at the same time consumption of alcohol is also bad , So those oppose beef eating must also support ban of alcoholic drink then it makes sense.Otherwise its is doublespeak

If the cattles raze on roads and other public / private properties, it will not look SMART....So the Police should warn the cattle owners, not to leave their cows as ORPHANS on roads..

A small piece of advice to all beef consumers of udupi n DK districts......

since there are no legal beef slaughter houses, following points to be noted n taken into serious consideration
    1. The so called beef meat is unhygienic
    2. It could have been slaughtered or from dead source
    3. slaughtered animal could have been stolen...as u dont buy it from shops so u can authenticate the source
    4. If its from stolen cattle, its illegal/haram for u to consume
    5. It could be the meat of other unlawful animals like dogs n pigs..
    6. Stolen animals meat carries a curse from the lawful owner of it n the curse shall be b on both the thief n consumer.
    7. Unhealthy animal without the hygienic certification from vet doctor makes the meat more unhealthy....so on

so please stop consuming beef supplied in clandestine manner...Let the govt establish legal slaughter houses..if no then only consume chicken n mutton from legal slaughter houses..90% of beef available these days is from stolen cattle which is haram n forbidden for consumption...so lets all beef consumers boycott beef delicacies for one year...so that cattle owners dont losen suffer n cattle thieves are reformed n settle down in more legal business of earning their daily bread...

Beef eaters must refrain from eating beef for two reasons.
    1) Stolen meat is haram and must refrain from buying beef as some do theft and business of cattle and doing things against Islam
    2) Red meat is dangerous to health as it causes many diseases including heart ailments. As beef is one of red meats better to avoid beef and those who want to eat can eat mutton.
Leave beef forever then it will make problem makers and cattle thieves jobless and to to find a decent job.

SN, Your arguments hold no good and are hollow!. First of all, stealing cattle happens because even legal is not allowed by some jobless people! even though they themselves have to reveal what they do with their old cattle!. Secondly, red meat is not proven to be harmful because if you see western countries and even in our country, people eating red meat are much stronger and healthier than vegetarians!. We are a total failure(except 0.1%) in international sports and athletics!. Also if red meat causes problems, why are French and much of western world which consumes many times more red meat than us live a longer life compared to us!?. You can write anything but without proof, its as good as junk!

Please do not expect others to conform to your eating habits. If Beef eating is such a big problem, then Id like to let you know that the meat is consumed widely in all countries of the world as a major source of protein, except India where it is restricted to a few. Open your eyes to other cultures, please don't behave like a frog in the well. The other point about beef being stolen is ridiculous. Most of the beef consumed here is of cattle that has been bought legally, for lakhs. Stealing is done by tne BD, who intercept vehicles even where the cattle are bought legally then transport to their goshalas. Learn to respect other cultures, please. Not everybody can wear the same dress or eat the same things as we do

Good move by the dept. One sincere suggestion why not the police dept open a beef transport co. and work on commission basis. Instead of taking commission illegally from the BD get the cow from the seller and transport to the legal slaughter house. Nor the cow will get suffocated and die because of the chase nor the BD will have any issue nor the purchaser will be at loss.

Almost all the assault cases have not been on cattle stolen, it is on cattle transported after the owners paid hefty sums to buy them, legally. In all these cases, the police have transferred cattle to sangh parivar run goshalas just because the goons created a ruckus. In the recent Kundapura case, the owner even provided proof of sale, but the cattle was transported to the goshala anyway. Interesting to know what happens to the cattle worth lakhs after it is transported to the goshala (there are many rumours floating about this). So who is the thief here? Why is the police helping the BD steal legally bought cattle as well? Is there some sort of commission involved?
