Mangaluru: Yettinahole Project will kill Netravati river, make fertile land barren: Poojary

Mangaluru, Aug 29: Senior Congress leader and former union minister Janardhan Poojary on Saturday August 29 criticized the Yettinahole project and said that it would be disastrous to the district.

Addressing a press meet at the district Congress office, Poojary said, "Netravati is an important river of this district and diverting its rivulets will kill the main river. Such experiments have been done in other parts of the country and the world and failed."

Giving examples, he said, "Kerala and Tamil Nadu had jointly agreed to divert three west flowing rivers to the east, but as a consequence, the rivers dried up and fertile land turned barren land. There was scarcity of fish and fishermen struggled to survive. People came to the streets. Water level reduced and people of Kerala began demanding water from Tamil Nadu.

"At the internatanal level, America diverted Colarado river by building dam, but as a result, the entire river dried up and crops were affected. There was scarcity of water and fertile land became uncultivable. The people of America then realized their mistake and demolished the dam," he said.

"In Dakshina Kannada there are many medical colleges, hospitals, and various institutions. What will happen if their demand for water is not met? What will be the situation? Farmers will come to the streets and hydroelectricity will be affected and there will not be enough power. It is the responsibility of people's representatives to see that this does not happen. Without applying any thought this decision has been taken," he added.

Making a veiled reference to former chief minister and Congress leader Veerappa Moily, he said, "A former Congress chief minister and former BJP chief minister D V Sadananda Gowda have given their nod for this project. They are sacrficiing the people of Dakshina Kannad. The entire fertile land will dry up. Except the MLAs of Puttur, Sullia and Beltangady, all other MLAs and MP are giving statements like they are sitting on the fence. People have elected them and it is their responsibilty to raise their voice."

"Mangaluru is going to develop as a Smart City, industries will come up here and population will grow. But we may not be able to provide sufficient water to fulfill the growing need," he added.

Criticizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Mahadayi water dispute, he said, "When the all-party delegation went to meet the PM demanding 7.5 TMC of water, he gave an unsatisficatory answer. There are so many MPs in Karnataka who can speak up in Parliament. Is Modi a dictator?

Referring to the protest by Patel community in Gujarat over reservation issue, he said, "Modi is telling lies. During Lok Sabha elections he said Gujarat is a heaven but now he's exposed. Gujarat's Patel community which brought him to power is now protesting. A community which is economically strong is now demanding reservation. Within 16 months of his administration, Modi has been exposed. There were small industries and diamond factories in Gujarat which have been closed
Modi is also involved in hate politics and it is evident in filing cases of against Congress CMs."

"There is shelling going on at the border and retired soldiers are demanding One Rank One Pension. Black money is yet to come - there is not even white money either," he added.
Commenting on the recent Attavar incident where a man was tied to a pole, stripped and assaulted by right-wing activists and others, he said, "Who has given them the right to strip and assault and individual? The police commissioner has done a good job in arresting the accused and sending them to Ballari jail. But if S Murugan is a good commissioner, he should also identify the actual persons behind this incident and invoke Goonda Act against them irrespective of the community they belong to and take severe action."

Slamming the Sangh Parivar, he said, "Why cannot the Sangh Parivar guide its youths in the right direction? BJP and Sangh Parivar are using youths from OBCs and SC/STs. Don't they have any sympathy for youths? What is the future of these youths? They (BJP and Sangh Parivar) provoke them and leave - why can't they mould them into good citizens?"

Mahabala Marla, corporator Deepak Poojary and others were present.

..He is protesting since MOILY interested in & MODI is in center..If UPA was in power do he protested, i doubt..what happened to MCC tax? ..Its pity that he is happy Gujrat was burned by a Kujli type man..that also by the people who came in BENZ/ROVARS for protest!..Its easy to burn than build..If tomorrow OWAISI comes & instigates minorities saying he will fight for 50% reservation, dont people burn property in Manglore & start supporting OWAISI than Congress!!..state Congress Govt releasing fund to the project..let him request them to stop, let Jannanna purely talk about protest without playing politics..every one will join him..

Mr. Poojari, though belongs to Congress, is a sensible politician. Having firmly rooted to the land and lives of people, a quality many of the politicians of DK cannot claim as of now, he has taken holistic and people-centric approach on many societal issues. He is, in fact, the right man on the wrong side. Yettinahole project is nothing short of foolishness and absurdity. Those showing exceptional reasoning on the project have vested interests. See the file photos. Things are happening at a speed for which the present Government is not known for. As known to everybody, the Government will be forced to abandon the project as a series of violations are involved. By this time, the politicians, bureaucrats and contractors would have shared their bounty to vacate the scene, leaving irreversible damage to the sensitive ecosystem. You need not even be a literate to get in to logic and arithmetic of the project. Availability of water and reach is over-estimated to confirm viability.

At Linganamakki, we are allowing 24 TMC or so water to flow down to generate electricity. Those involved in generation and distribution will make livelihood!... At Kempuhole, we are lifting 24 TMC water to the same height against gravity by spending more electricity than generated at Sharavathi, with an overall outlay nobody can dream of. Those involved in the project will ensure livelihood for generations!.. In fact, parched areas of Karnataka need to adopt eco-friendly water management techniques as a sustainable alternative. Democracy is a costly affair where the entire burden is on the taxpayer. To quote Bernard Shaw, "Democracy is a system to ensure you are delivered always less than what you deserve". Hats off to Brit who envisioned democracy in Indian context decades back. Politicians like Mr. Kateel and Mr. DVS Gowda shall stop the language of doublespeak. A strong movement of people is need of the hour. How many Dinesh Hollas are required to bring people of DK out of their slumber...?

    Poojary is seasoned politician.
Now that the project has started and Siddhu has no plans to stop or rethink, Poojary wants to play safe. He wants to raise both hands and tell "Yaanijji.. yaan jankulnottige. Ethinahole bodche bodchi"
Anyways good gimmick. But i am not sure he will get a ticket for the next MP seat!!

everyone talking about the consequences of this project. even out media exposed this issue. instead of giving lecture on this subject people to come to street & protest then only govt can open the eyes else they wont bother. onemore thing right now congress is in power & congress leader should convince him & oppose the project. when we are blaming modi for mahadayi project why we are not blaming siddu. these people coming to press meet only for political gain. if he is really worried about yettinahole project then he should organise a protest then we can trust him.

2000 TMC of water flows into Arabian Sea from Netravati river per year. One TMC (Thousand Million Cubic feet) is 28.3169 Billion litres. At 142 MLD, Mangalore Municipality supplies nearly 2 TMC of water per year. Yettinahole project is 24 TMC that is equivalent to 12 year Mangalore water supply. No doubt, if 24 TMC of water is collected at rainy season, there should not be a problem. Water reservoir considered largest is planned in Saudi, each with 188 ML, that means if we are able to store water during rainy season for next 8 months, we will require more than 2000 reservoirs which is beyond comprehension. Hence, the problem for Mangalore is definite and what Mr Poojary says is right thing.

Mr BJP, you are 100% correct on yettinahole project. fight against this passionately. people will be behind you on this. every single manglorean will be affected by this. if we sleep now, our next generation will curse us. The example you gave is also correct. The agitation should start in early stages itself. otherwise money already spent on the project will be considered to continue with this project.
