Mangaluru: Khader announces health intiatives; says no one can stop Yettinahole Project

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (DV)

Mangaluru, Aug 29: Minister for health and family welfare U T Khader on Saturday August 29 announced that Karnataka has become only the second state in the country to implement child screening programme, where a newborn would be tested for certain health conditions free of cost.

Addressing a press meet at the Circuit House here, Khader said that currently, the machine to test blood sample of newborn babies is set up at CV Raman Nagar Hospital, Bengaluru. "In every government hospital in the state, blood samples of every newborn will be collected and sent to Bengaluru for tests. In future, private hospitals will also be asked to start this programme, for which they may charge a nominal fee."

"Nearly 80,000 births are recorded every month, and per day 2,000 tests can be done with this machine. An agency has been appointed to oversee the process, and it will collect blood samples of newsborns and send them to Bengaluru and also send back the reports to the respective hospitals. The process will take up to eight hours."

"A single procedure will cost Rs 512. A newborn will be tested for problems related to thyroid, enzymes, genetic, fertility related and so on," he added.

He also announced that the state government has implemented thermal ablation procedure for women with problems related to uterus. "The procedure will take only 15 minutes after which the patient can go home. This will be done free cost at CV Raman Nagar hospital in Bengaluru, and in future it will be extended to other parts of the state too," he said.

Khader further said that there should be clarity with regard to bans issued by the central government in cases like Maggi and certain cosmetics by pharmaceuticals. "The central government should take decision after holding dicussion. There should be clarity and nothing should be banned blindly. THe central governmment has not given clarity on Maggi. If there is any problem in any food, let the government shut down the factory itself. The state will not accept any blind decision."

"No one can stop Yettinahole project"

When reporters brought up the burning topic of Yettinahole project, Khader said, "It is an old story. D V Sadananda Gowda (union law minister) had taken this decision when he was chief minister. At that time we were in the opposition and the project was passed with majority backing in the Assembly. Once it is passed in the Assembly it means the whole state has approved this project and no one can stop it."

A heated discussion ensued during which the minister was bombarded with a series of questions by the reporters. When asked why there was no public hearing on the project, he said "The project was discussed in Bengaluru under the initiative of the district incharge minister."

He did not give a clear answer when asked why there was no public hearing in Dakshina Kannada.

When a reporter asked what would happen if there was scarcity in Dakshina Kannada in future, he said a checkdam would be built under the Paschima Vahini project to tackle water scarcity.

When reporters pointed about the possible impact on the environment, and that 24 TMC of water would not be obtained from the project as expected and that the government was also considering making use of Kumaradhara river, he only replied that experts have already discussed all these issues.

Asked if, being from Dakshina Kannada, he would support the Yettinahole project, he said, "As a responsible representative, I cannot go against the government. I will inform district incharge minister about all these issues and also the irrigiation miniser regarding public hearing in Dakshina Kannada. The government is keen to finish the project"

On senior Congress leader Janardhan Poojary opposition to the project, he said, "He is a senior and experienced leader. I will not comment on him."

"Attavar incident a blemish"

Regarding the recent incident at Attavar in which a man was stripped, tied to a pole and assaulted by right-wing activists and others, he said, "The incident is a blemish to our district. When Mangaluru is becoming a Smart City, people also should become smart. The police have taken stringent action against the culprits.

"Police should also file suo motu cases against those who give provocative speeches, no matter who it may be. These types of incidents take place because of poison injecte through provocative speeches," he opined.

Asked if the incident reflected failure of the state government, Khader said, "The police have taken immediate and stringent action. It is not a failure of the government."

When asked why the state government had failed to arrest those who made provocative speeches in the last two-and-a-half years, he said the police have take suitable action.

When a reporter pointed out that the Karnataka Komu Souharda Vedike had found that incidents of moral policing had increased during Congress' tenure as compared to BJP's regime in the state, he said, "The atmosphere is different now. When BJP was in power it was defending such incidents, but we are against such acts and have taken immediate action after each incident. Some jobless people are sending messages through social media. We need to be united in our fight."

People of mangalore are not united in fighting against this project, that's why these politicians are not feeling the heat, they have taken us for granted, all the organisations in mangalore should come together irrespective of caste , creed, religion language or idiology afterall this is about the survival for all people of DK,
Let PFI, BD, VHP etc fight for this rather than creating rift among the people.

A very reprehensible comment!Minister Khader and other MLAs were elected from DK district to safeguard the people's interest of this region. You are supposed to be our representatives and if you have no guts to stand up for the interests of the people here, it is better to resign. Taking up works on the sly for the project without any clearances or not taking the opinions of the people of the region is tantamount to betrayal of our interests. Water resources everywhere are depleting at an alarming rate and to take up a project in a region which is already facing water scarcity and diverting our resources elsewhere is nothing but foolishness on the part of the government. You don't need experts sitting in AC chambers to tell you the facts staring at you in the face. And even if the experts have not recommended the project, the government knows every trick to turn things in their favour to get the project going.
We, the people of DK district are being taken for a ride by our MPs and MLAs and we only are to blame for that. We have hardly shown our support to the few people who opposed the project before its inception. If only all of us in the district were united in our opposition to the Yettinahole project, things wouldn't have come to such a pass. But, we seem to be more keen in wasting our energies on issues that keep happening in and around Mangalore in the last few days rather than focusing all our might on something which will affect our very daily existence. Why cant we, the people of DK get up from our slumber and not allow others to take us for granted. Are we afraid to protest or do we not have the time or do we really care what happens in the future? Cant we safeguard our future now? Remember that nothing can stand in the way of people's power if only we apply our minds to it. Air and land is already polluted, greenery is depleting, weather is becoming intolerable and water will become scarce! What are we waiting to happen? Get up before its too late!

When you elect a dumb persons as your MLAs, you should be ready for such stupid ideas. They have already made their money and they let the common man of DK suffer forever. Nation can succeed only when you raise above caste/religion based politics. "Nation First" should be the mantra when you your candidate.

No doubt Mr. Kadhar is a noble man. Even Bheeshma & Karna in Mahabaratha were noble, but they lost their battle just because they were on wrong side.... !! If we see many anti environment projects were awarded to DK & Udupi simply because people here only oppose cow slaughtering, inter religious marriages, beef ban, church attacks (Only religious issues) etc….. ! Politicians knows our weakness and they are using it. For sure Mr. Kadhar is right when he said no one can stop this project, because we are not united. If we unite irrespective of our religion, caste, party, and color we can stop this project. Choice is ours...

"As a responsible representative, I cannot go against the government." Will Mr. Khader clarify whom he represents and for whose benefit he should stand and fight for? This sort of irresponsible statements can do more harm than good. How he can hide behind a decision taken by previous BJP Government. Did the present Government implement all decision taken by previous one as a matter of administrative continuity? Testing facility set up at CVRN Hospital for newborn babies across Karnataka is joke of the millennium. After the test, they may detect thyroid/genetic/fertility defects in the baby. What is the next course of action from the side of health department? Do you have funds and infrastructure to offer next level intervention or further treatment? Or the patients will be referred to private medical colleges as guinea pigs for advanced experiments? Our HM is talking as if he represents a welfare state. 80,000 births, 2,000 tests per day, agency to oversee the process, collecting blood samples of newborns at doorstep, sending samples to Bengaluru, reports at respective hospitals within eight hours...What an utopian idea. Are we living in Karnataka or Birmingham? "A newborn will be tested for problems related to thyroid, enzymes, genetic, fertility related and so on. Thermal ablation procedure offered to women." Let him first establish basic health care delivery system and improve its reach. Provide adequate qualified and skilled manpower rather than depending on nursing students and medical interns/students. First tackle Viral Fever, Malaria, Dengue, Chikungunya, Japanese Encephelitis, H1N1, TB, Leptopsirosis etc... etc. Next comes diabetes, cancer and cardio-vascular diseases which is rampant in the state. Tests and therapy for genetic disorders [which has limited scope for medical interventions] can wait. Misplaced priorities!.. Those who have not qualified in district level sports meet cannot dream of participating in Olympics!... Forget about winning a bronze...

Even when some bills are passed by majority in assembly (example: Cow slaughter) it can be changed.
