Abu Dhabi: Poets converge for Konkan Pearls 'Kavita Bhanvar'

Media Release

Abu Dhabi, Aug 30: 'Konkan Pearls: Konkan Motiyan' Abu Dhabi organized 'Kavita Bhanvar', a unique event comprising three different genres of Konkani poetry on August 28 at Foodlands Auditorium, Abu Dhabi.

The event began with a prayer and welcome speech by president Wilfy Fernandes followed by a prayer dance by Monisha Rasqinha. Wilson Pinto presented a prelude to the cultural extravaganza.

Renowned singers from all over UAE - Melwyn D'Souza, Prashath Sequeira, Lydwin Cutinha, Godwin D'Souza, Divya Pinto, Ida Fernandes, Melwyn Fernandes, Wilfy Fernandes, Rony D'Souza, Alwyn D'Souza, Ashwin, Eileen D'Costa and the little Ishney Fernandes - enthralled the audience with popular Konkani hits specially chosen for this event.

Group dance performances by children of Abu Dhabi (Monisha, Monal, Ishney, Keona, Deona and Macleen) and Dubai (Viola and Vidisha) entertained the audience.

The icing on the cake was the folklore of Konkani culture 'Gumta Podam' titled 'Goin Sandun Aili Mai' and 'Santhanichia Dongrar' led by Sannu Monis and Wilson Pinto which mesmerized the young and old alike.

'Kavigoshtti' - recital of Konkani poems by budding poets like Suresh Saldanha, Darrel D'Souza, Melwin Kalakul, Mario Barnes provided them the first opportunity to present their poetic talent. Veteran poets like Wilson Pinto, Dony Correa, Arthur Pereira, P J Karugalnade, Godwin D'Souza, Stany Bela, Preetham Kirem and Wilfy Fernandes kept the audience spellbound. The whole Kavigoshtti was interactively anchored by veteran poet Sannu Monis with his witty humour.

'Kavita Bhanvar' had its finale with the presentation of the traditional 'Mando' and 'Vaerse', another form of Konkani folklore, by the members of Konkan Motiyan.

Prashanth Sequeira was on keyboard along with Errol Serao on bass guitar. Rony D'souza was at his best with his sound system and photography.

Ida Fernandes proposed the vote of thanks. The event was compered jointly by Wilfy Fernandes and Godwin D'Souza.

The programme concluded with the traditional 'Laudate'.

A big salute to Mr. Wilfred Fernandes for organizing such a high profile poets' mushaaira. He truly deserves applause. I have always seen and felt that he is capable of bringing together people for many such Konkani programmes of unique themes and concept. KP's many programmes and shows in the past, especially in Abu Dhabi are a testimony for this. But this one beats them all.

He really needs support and I am glad in this particular occasion he has got the solid backing from our stalwart writers, composers, musicians, actors, critics, singers and poets along with the amateur ones too, including the children. It is wonderful to see the ladies being in the forefront of poetic expression. And the Gumtam songs by our singers in its true traditional attire are like icing on the cake.

Hope many such events will take shape from Wilfy's imagination for the sole purpose of embellishment of our mother tongue.

After all, it is because of this one sweet language we always find some excuse to come together !
