EU to hold ministerial meeting on migrant crisis

Berlin, Aug 30 (IANS): Germany, France and Britain on Sunday made a joint call for an urgent meeting involving European Union (EU) interior and justice ministers to cope with the migration crisis which reached a peak after the recent discovery of 71 dead bodies in a truck in Austria.

"The ministers have asked the Luxembourg presidency to organise a special meeting of justice and interior ministers within the next two weeks, so as to find concrete steps on the crisis," Xinhua cited a joint statement by interior ministers of the three nations as saying.

The decision coincided with Hungarian police's announcement of a fifth arrest late on Saturday over last week's shocking discovery of the bodies of the migrants in Austria.

According to Hungarian police, the newly-arrested person is a Bulgarian male who is suspected of human trafficking. Hungary had earlier arrested four people believed to be related to the tragedy.

An influx of migrants seeking refuge in Europe has not only led to rising numbers of deaths, but also triggered a wave of xenophobic sentiments on the continent.
