One killed, 13 injured as LPG tanker topples, catches fire at Kumta

Karwar, Sep 1: An elderly lady was killed and 13 others injured after a bullet tanker carrying liquefied petroleum gas tumbled on the road and exploded into flames near Kumta on Tuesday September 1.

The deceased has been identified as Nagaveni Patagar (84).

The injured were rushed in ambulances to Kasturba Medical College (KMC) Hospital, Manipal. Out of the 14 admitted to KMC Manipal, one succumbed to burns injury, 8 are in critical condition and 5 are stable, said hospital sources. Among the injured were 7 men, four women, a boy and a girl.

The driver suffered fracture injury and is undergoing treatment.

Out of the injured, five are from one family, four from another family.

The flames also spread to nearby houses. A dog also sustained burn injuries.

The tragedy occurred near Bargi in Kumta taluk at around 5.30 am. The vehicle lost balance and fell by its side after its driver lost control over the vehicle. A number of fire tenders, including from Udupi, rushed to the spot and managed to bring the raging flames under control.

Kumta police rushed to the spot and cordoned off the area.

    Why they (loot-mar officials) allow to transport LPG bullet-tankers on roads and within residential area irrespective of national highway.

    This report says the injured were rushed to Kasturba Medical Hospital in Manipal. I understand the distance from Karwar to Manipal is 219 kms (4 hrs 20 minutes). Considering that major accidents (like this one) take place on the outskirts of the city and on arterial highways, those who were / are injured must have already lost their precious lives. Lack of prominent hospitals to cater quickly to the injured are the need of the hour to save people from succumbing to their injuries. In India, everything is lagging.

    How some one will loose control??? only when they take things to out of control right... why authorities are not able to stop such incidents?? i feel it is just because they are not working as per rule book. Instead of government doing just campaigning on road safety, they should actually implement road safety rules and fine the people who violate, with this government also gets money and at the same time they can reduce number of accidents.

    Why don't the RTO make it compulsory of installing the speed limiting governors on such inflammatory bullet tankers speeding on congested national highways that pass through villages and towns and winding ghats. Why can't the bullet tankers and trucks are given permission to ply during 11 pm and 7 am when the traffic is minimum. The bullet tanker drivers are rash and over speedy. They prefer going on the first carriageway that is not allowed anywhere in the developed world.

    The firemen took a wise decision of 'controlled combustion' by cooling the tank with water while allowing the flame to continue , burning off the LPG.

    We have to blame only the speed which is beyond control. Bullet tanker is not a bullet train.

    These so called bullet container drivers don't know they virtually sitting on fire....and still driving Recklessly on road...The RTO should give special training for the DRIVERS of Hazardous chemicals and gas containers ...

    Very dangerous to drive these vehicles on the roads.....If accidents occur, then near by houses on NH are not safe..

    Instead the Konkan railway can have double track and all such tankers can be transported on this track.... Mr Chaiwala please listen and work on this issue...Good luck to you..

    Very bad..what's happened.
    Should be very very careful while carrying hazardous materials.
    Sometimes due to the shortage of drivers and workload chacnes are more superiors pressurising driver's to deliver the material quickly as possible.
    For small incentive..driver's fall into the trap..and incur such fatal accident.
    Whatever happened is not good.
    To avert major accident..may be driver not jumped out of the vehicle..!!
