Saudis to stop hiring costly Bangladeshi workers

Riyadh, Sep 1 (IANS): Saudi recruitment offices have decided to stop hiring Bangladeshi workers because they claim that a supply crunch has raised costs, the media reported on Tuesday.

Ibrahim Al-Megheimish, a recruitment expert, said that there were too few Bangladeshi workers seeking employment, which now means costs have risen from $1,000-1,800 just to bring them to Saudi Arabia, Arab News reported.

He said the cost outlined by the Saudi labour ministry is not enough to cover all the expenses incurred in bringing workers to the country. This has also been the complaint of other recruitment office owners, who said costs have risen 80 percent.

Al-Megheimish said the ministry’s claim that 500,000 Bangladeshi domestic workers would seek employment in the country has not materialised. Currently only four to six workers a week are supplied for work in Saudi Arabia, he said.

He said the training centers in Bangladesh are limited. In addition, the training period is four weeks, which has resulted in delays and penalties for workers, he said.

All Gulf countries have exploited the cheap Bangladeshi labor for decades.

These countries are too happy when the oil prices go through the roofs, but never concerned about the rising cost of living in countries that supply food, machinery, medicines and labor to these countries.

All countries should unite and fix the minimum wages for their nationals who want to work in Gulf countries with strict conditions attached as per ILO, UN, Human Rights organizations etc.

Qatar world cup construction activities have exposed the exploitation, death of migrant workers from Nepal, attracting international condemnation of migrant workers in GCC region.

Its high time to Saudis to get training themselves for domestic job at the earliest. As its alarming situation for them as 'Thel ka Khel Khatam', as Iran will shine in coming months in oil export-sector. And now a days Asian workers are not migrating to labor or domestic job at GCC, as they can earn more in their own country and as well these two categories nobody want to work. All are skilled now a days. Time is changing very fast and outdated country like Saudi Arabia should wake-up quickly and change their mindset ASAP.
