Drought situation in Karnataka 'worst' in 40 years: CM

Bengaluru, Sep 2 (PTI): Describing the drought situation in the state as the "worst" in 40 years, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has asked officials to take it as a "challenge".

He has also warned strict action against negligent officials.

Addressing the Conference of Regional Commissioners, Deputy Commissioners and Chief Executive Officers of Zilla Panchayats here, he directed that officials and staff should not be sanctioned long leave, unless it is an emergency.

He has also asked them to stop sending officials and staff on training.

Making it clear that there is no shortage of funds, he directed the officials to take all necessary steps to supply drinking water.

Pointing out that there is drought situation in 135 of 176 taluks, he asked officials to take steps to prevent villagers and farmers from migrating by providing them job opportunities under the Mahatma Gandhi Employment Guarantee Scheme.

He also stressed on the importance of setting up fodder banks and cow sheds and directed the Chief Secretary to take action against taluk officials who failed in taking steps.

Siddaramaiah advised officials to take precautionary steps to control spread of epidemics during drought.

Expressing concern over farmer suicide incidents reaching the 400 mark till now this year from 58 in 2013-14 and 48 in 2014-15, he said exorbitant loans and private money lenders are the main reason for this, and asked officials to implement steps taken by the government to prevent such incidents.

It is a strange Dolare story. Over the years Government doesn't purchase the grains and formers output and store it and sell it to dealers. Government must build form storage and buying programmes and sell it to dealers. The irrigation programme must be done with the help of big players, so many world bank programmes over the decade got looted. For rains please pray Hanuman.

It's really a tragedy that even 68 years after gaining political independence, India is not yet independent in the true sense of the word.

Droughts, floods (caused mainly due to factors like deforestation, inefficient water-resources management as a result of human greed), natural/unnatural calamities, starvation deaths have made life miserable for the vast majority of India's suffering crores of people.

Let's all, especially the highly knowledgeable and progressive members of the Daijiworld forum, make an effort to give up the blame game and divisive issues join together and try to offer practical solutions, for the progress and unity of our great country, 'mother India'.

Leaving aside all of the fekus, pappus, niddes, let's join together to make India great, progressive and an example for all the countries of the world to emulate.

Thank GOD at least they realized that drought situation exists in our Karnataka too. But why they are in so happy mood instead of grieving???? Will this CONGiss Govt stops their freebies business and accumulates the funds for helping the needy at drought area? I think no rather they will start blaming Central for lack of grants!!!

The problem of drought is acute in Karnataka and Maharashtra. In Latur, the water is supplied by Municipality once in 15 days and people have started stealing water. Now, we should co-operate with Govts, be it, BJP or Congress in their effort to mitigate this problem.
No one makes a lock without key and God also won't give problems without solutions.

Drought worried people who are all happy looking and laughing?Judge them by looking at photos. Is anyone is worried by look. Picture No.4. Must have dinner at five star hotel paid by citizens.
Look at the picture no.7 and judge the seriousness of the meeting.

I thought Mobiles are not allowed during meetings after Palemar Incident. Talking of drought and food shortage!!! Just look at those skinny food starving people? food shortage is for honest, hardworking people of the state. These Corrupt, well fed in five star hotels, living in free housing making the mockery of honest Citizens. Meetings are a day out in fun and frolic at Tax Payers expenses. End result of this meeting will be some program with who makes the most under table.

Last pic selfie.. pricey, iPhone 6 plus... anyways... solution for famine, keep turning rivers, then ask center for funds
.. then blame center.. no party in india is equipped to combat challenges of tomorrow... acute resource shortage, growing population and unplanned cities... wonder how it's all going to work out. Only hope is that the economy grows to a point that desalination becomes a viable option... but for that even places like California are not able to keep up with the costs and no solution for the poisonous brine it creates. Until we reach that day let's keep happily fighting over petty things.bring it on puny citizens, let's fight it on feku pappu soga raga bhoga nidde pidde all of them..
