Mangaluru, Sep 3: Hours after the police arrested 34 including 11 women for obstructing road work at Jokatte, hundreds of protestors gathered outside Suratkal police station here condeming the police action.

The protestors who gathered in huge numbers demanded the release of the arrested persons.

The police detained several protestors and took them to Panambur police station, along with those who had been arrested earlier. Several protestors also gathered at Panambur station.

Four of the persons who were arrested - DYFI president Muneer Katipalla, Shamshuddin, Moidin and Hakeem - were produced in court while rest of the detained persons were released.

Meanwhile, it is learnt that MRPL too has filed a case against DYFI for obstructing work.

Speaking to daijiworld, DYFI district secretary Santosh Bajal said, "The SEZ contractors are not following rules. They are working without licence. In a recent meeting, the gram panchayat had ordered that SEZ works should not proceed until all the issues are sorted out. They should respect the gram panchayat orders. By continuing their work, they are breaking the rules.

"A certain distance from residential area has to be mandatorily maintained while developing industries. But here the industry is very near to Jokatte residential area. We will not stop our struggle until the matter is resolved," he added.

Cases have been registered against Muneer Katipalla and other arrested persons in both Suratkal and Panambur police stations.

Mangaluru: Jokatte residents protest SEZ road work - 34 including women arrested

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (CLP)

Mangaluru, Sep 3: Chaos prevailed near Jokatte railway gate here on Thursday September 3 after locals led by DYFI president Muneer Katipalla prevented officials and workers from carrying out repair work on the corridor road leading to SEZ.

It is learnt that deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim had given orders to take up the repair work on the approach road to SEZ, and had written to the police commissioner to provide police protection to the workers in view of recent protests by Jokatte residents against the ongoing works at SEZ.

As per the DC's orders, the road work was about to begin at Jokatte under heavy police security, when locals led by Muneer Katipalla arrived and protested by lying down on the road.

The police arrested 34 protestors, including Katipalla and 11 women, and took them to the Suratkal police station.

Speaking to daijiworld, Katipalla said, "We had told the DC that no work related to SEZ should take place at Jokatte at any cost. In spite of our appeals, the DC has issued orders to undertake work under police protection.

"When the police came to arrest us, we lay on the roads. The police arrested 18 people including women. Though we have been arrested, locals are still protesting at the spot," he added.

Police sources told daijiworld that an FIR is yet to be filed.

Nothing happens of this scale without the support of politicians. Here in this case it is the opposition to thwart the good things the ruling party is intending to do for people so that these parties and the people have something to attack them and pull the ruling party down. But these are same people who will cry foul when there are no jobs, poverty and no development. This is India's politics!!!!

This nonsense protest has been going on for a long time. It is only because of political patronage these useless protesters have been spared.Anywhere else they would have been given the Aeroplane treatment by now.I call upon the District Administration and the law keeping forces to deal with these elements with a firm hand. there is always a negotiating table and a window has been provided indeed. Just to lay on the road shows the mentality of these protesters. No wonder India cannot gallop towards self sufficiency even if it wants to.
I am sure of one thing though...Like somebody commented here..Bellary days are not far off for these protesters..Then nobody would protect them...

It is not black and white as you think...Development cant happen at human cost...Will you and your family ready to breath poisonous air and drink oil and poison filled water from well on the pretext ..."mangalore want to develop"...In same way these people too are human ...they too have children...If MNC's want to come ...we have millions of hectare of arid land in karnataka witj very less density of people...relocation will also be easy...why chose SEZ in midst of residential area...It is true everyone wants development...But would people those who bats for SEZ ready to live in this type of environment in exchange for this people...No one will be ready....To preach on others we Indians will always be in forefront...But when we face the same situation we change our tone...

SEZ means you sign a document giving land to Multinational companies hounded out of other countries. Why they are hounded of their countries coz wealthy nations are already facing climatic problems. They approached INDIA as we are peace loving nation even if we do not eat or drink hygienic. Our babus and politicians with illegal money will be able to buy , build and live a secure life in third country. That is why SWISS BANK accounts are not disclosed.

Mangalore's main problem that job opportunity here is less. Most of the youths in Jokatte,Katipalla and Mangalore are jobless or underemployed. Therefore there is enough time for them to indulge in anti social acts. They even do not support developmental works.I seriously doubt about happening of Mangalore transforming into a smart city.
