Mangaluru, Sep 3: A halo around the sun had the residents of the city looking up at the sky on Thursday September 3.
The phenomenon, called 22 degree halo, is a type of optical phenomenon caused by water particles or ice crystals in the atmosphere.
The halo typically appears in cirrus or cirrostratus clouds. The light is refracted by the water particles by an angle of 22 degrees, hence the name. The refraction makes the circular halo look colourful.
The halo phenomenon is not limited any particular season and can happen anytime and anywhere, depending on the viewer's and the sun's positions.
The halo can often be sign of rain within the next 24 hours, which is a good news for the city as rain has been sparse in the last many days.
