Udupi, Sep 4: Illegal transport of sand, sand mining in the coastal region and the sand policy issue echoed at the zilla panchayat general body meeting held at Rajatadri, Manipal on Thursday September 3.
MLC Prathapchandra Shetty said that the sand committee should take all responsibility. “The existing sand policy on CRZ and non-CRZ are different. The committee would be responsible for scarcity of sand to the public,” he said.

Kodandaramaiah, sand department officer said, “There are 11 non-CRZ blocks in the district (2 in Udupi, 4 in Kundapur and 5 in Karkala).” He added that he is not aware of any illegal sand transportation in Kundapur taluk.

A heated discussion took place on the matter of installation of CCTVs at every sand bar to supervise these activities and the final decision was left to the DC as well as the CEO.

Another matter of discussion was the nearly 70 percent vacancies in veterinary posts in Udupi district. Ananth Mavody said that government projects are never complete without necessary staff.

One of the ZP members complained that the BCM hostel students did not get uniforms even after school having started for a while now.

The MLC said that all tahashildars should compulsorily attend all meetings and suggested issuing a show cause notice to them if they failed to do so.

In 2015-16, 36, 360 applications were received from pre-metric students and an amount of nearly Rs. 1.58 lac has been sanctioned.

Under ‘Pashu Bhagya’ scheme, nearly 49 cattle and 88 sheep have been released to Udupi district.
