Udupi: Kumta gas tanker tragedy - Kin of deceased to get compensation of Rs 2 lac

Udupi, Sep 4: Minister for industries and tourism R V Deshpande on Friday September 4 announced a compensation of Rs 2 lac each for the family of the deceased and Rs 1 lac each for the injured in the Kumta gas tanker tragedy which took place at Bargi near Kumta in Uttara Kannada district on Tuesday, September 1.

Deshpande, who is also the incharge minister of Uttara Kannada district made the announcement during his visit to KMC Hospital, Manipal, where the victims of the tragedy have been admitted. Deshpande visited the 8 injured persons at KMC burns ward.

He said that Rs 2 lac and Rs 1 lac will be given to the family of the deceased and injured respectively from the CM's relief fund. He also said that he will try for a compensation of Rs 10 lac.

"It was a shocking tragedy in which five lost their lives, several sustained injuries and 12 houses got damaged. Hence a compensation of Rs 10 lac for each injured persons as well as family of the deceased has been sought," he said.

MLA Pramod Madhwaraj was present with the minister.

    The compensation seems to be according to the status of the victims of this disaster. God forbid no politician was involved.
    Can any guess the how much money could have been awarded in such cases?

    This tragedy is not the first time in mangalore. We have heard about such accidents in the past killing many innocent people. Question is what action government has taken to avoid reccurences? Providing Compensation is under civil law. How come the gas company's responsible managers have not booked under criminal act as manslaughters? Why can't some society concern lawyer sue on this company on behalf of public interest for breaching Factories act?

    This has become a headline such a disgrace. Its not like they have won a lottery or something....Media or people should have questioned about what action government has taken against the company or what steps company will take to prevent this in future this will be the right thing to ask and it makes a wonderful headline.

    Oil company steal natural resources from the ground. By paying tax and employing people and keeping share holders happy. But when someone dies there should be better compensation too. These days 2 lakhs you don't get very far . Specially when family put so time and energy to bring the person .
