Kasargod, Sep 7: In a daylight robbery that seemed straight out of the movies, masked men barged into a bank here on Monday September 7 afternoon and looted 21 kg of gold and Rs 13 lac in cash, after threatening and tying up women staff and a customer.

The incident took place at the Eriyal branch of Kudlu Service Cooperative Bank. Five masked men armed with weapons entered the bank and closed the shutters from the inside. Two woman staff identified as Laxmi and Bindu screamed for help. The robbers brandished their weapons threatening, and then tied up Laxmi and gagged Bindu after making her sit on a chair. They also threatened a woman customer named Khamru Banu.

The robbers then broke open the lockers and took away gold worth 5.28 crore and cash worth Rs 13 lac.

The also snatched away 15 sovereigns of gold from Khamru Banu, who had come to the bank to deposit her gold ornaments, and also the gold chains that the female staff had worn.

The bank manager was out for lunch at the time. The entire incident took place within a matter of minutes, between around 2 pm to 2.05 pm. The robbers fled from the spot soon after in two bikes, in which they had come.

Superintendent of police M Srinivas and other police officials arrived at the spot and investigations are on.

Canine squad and fingerprint experts were also called. The investigation has been extended not only to Kerala but to Karnataka too. Police have found a dagger at the spot reportedly belonging to the robbers.

Strangely, the bank has no security guard nor CCTV camera. This despite the fact that the same bank was robbed 14 years ago in 2001, when 7 kg of gold was stolen in a theft during the night. Six persons were arrested in the case and sentenced recently.

It is really shocking incident. How can the bank is so irresponsible.Bank has so much cash and gold from customers, even though bank authorities does not require cctv or watchman to protect the bank. The customer will get his gold back? Customer should think first before keeping their valuables in the Bank.

This is sad, the bank should install security cameras. I think people should stop automatically blaming the staff, they are just employees like most of people who are working in offices. Don't stress those people any more than they already must be currently and yes it is defamatory, as the integrity of the bank manager and staff is being questioned, which is not fair to them. Let the police do their job.

Very interesting.Manager was out for lunch,In bank no cctv camera, two Ladys inside .and thieves know where the Gold is placed and cash.how they can break open without the key(From staff)and so much Gold is placed near their feet?Iam sure it is definately tips from staff.and how come thieves knew the customer Lady had Gold? The thieves could enter the Counter without Problem and nobody called Police till everything is over?I see only knives.Means to rob a bank enough one knife.was there no watchman with a gun?suspicious everything.A thourough investigation by staff first is a must before they look for other.

I saw in many nationalized banks from 2 to 2:30 pm there is lunch break during this time no service to any customers. and how the robbers knows the manager is out? something fishy.effect of movies

It is really shocking that bank has CCTV camera and no security as the bank was robbed 14 years back. The bank management did not foresee the possible chances but the thieves calculated the loopholes of Bank. Culprits have to be arrested in no time as a big operation from police and government required to nab the thieves. Such audacity should never be entertained as arrest and sever punishment of culprits required
