Fire in Air India flight, seven passengers injured

New Delhi, Sep 7 (IANS & PTI): A minor fire broke out in an Air India flight while landing at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International airport on Monday evening, in which seven passengers were injured, police said.

"Varanasi-Delhi flight AI 405 caught fire while landing at runway No.27 at the IGI airport around 8.30 p.m. today (Monday)," said a police official.

After the plane touched down at the Indira Gandhi International Airport here, smoke was seen from under carriage and pilot opted for evacuation, sources said.

The fire started after the hydraulic system of the flight reportedly failed.

"A total of 146 passengers onboard were evacuated safely and taken to the terminal building but seven of them received minor injuries," said the official.

The flight had originated from Khajuraho for Varanasi, from where it took off for Delhi.

When even comparing with the other discount airlines in India, the Air India planes domestically flying are in terrible condition to look at both inside and outside, and it seems like mechanically also in bad condition.

Once I flew from Chennai to Tirvandrum in an Air India plane, the torn down seats and the inside look made me scared all the way flying like a gamble with life.

This particular flight was by Indian Airlines before. That airline rarely had problems financially, technically or service. Once the sick airline Air India swallowed them now every flight is at risk. I do not know why the gulf people take this dangerous airline. Qatar Airways,Emirates,Etihad etc are hundred times better though do not fly to Mangalore. But,fly to Bangalore and take Jet Airways to Mangalore if you want to fly safe and comfortably.

    Dear Krish
Air India's problem since Tata's left the airline and central government took the career. Its a official career to government employees, so whoever comes to power in central they will make use and treat it as granted.. Modi never did any magic to Air India to run in a profitable way.

Totally negligence, lack of maintenance, corrupt managements. Every year loss was filled by tax payers money.
Service dedicated to politicians and to their family.
For such tragedy and loss is the airline follow Montreal Conviction or our ruling govt taking any action. Unfortunately in previous govt Mr.Moily was the law minister never show any interest about mangalore air crash matter and in preset govt Mr.Sadanand gowda he will not interest to show and interest on present case. Bith are looking for their sons future. One is looking for congress ticket and another one is to survive his son from court case.

    Shankar,
I believe you are one of those Indians who are so used to the saying
'a bus is a bus is a bus',
no matter what, and as long as you reach the destination.

Have you ever travelled on Air India?

Have you ever compared the state of Air India flights originating from the South of India with those originating from the North? I am surprised you are from Mangalore.

Various classes of passengers rich or poor migrant Indians, laborers or professionals from the gulf travel by Air India and most of the time they fly Air India out of sheer helplessness and because of the proximity of the flight to their homes. Sometimes it's to attend a funeral, a urgent business meeting, a family urgency or an unplanned family celebration, and for all these times Air India seems to be the only convenient flight not necessarily airworthy or safe as in reassuringly safe. We all take great risk flying Air India out of sheer helplessness or madness if you might call it.

There have been instances where a flight flew back to the home base halfway from the gulf in a total of 7 hours on one engine as the other one had failed, or several instances where flights were diverted to other airports due to failed engine or instances where flight times were increased due to low performance of the aircraft.

In all these instances we were fortunate that divine intervention was always there to ensure safety of passengers.

I suggest you travel on Qatar Airways or Air Arabia and you will see the difference, in on-board service, cleanliness, airworthiness of flights, etc., and that's what I tell the immigration officers upon being questioned why I patronize airlines other than my national career.

Of course I will add here that of late Air India has introduced slightly better aircrafts for their flights originating from the South, however there is a lot more they need to do in terms of assuring flight safety and passenger comfort.

    Mr. D'Silva,
Once on board Lufthansa, from Frankfurt to Istanbul , the take off was delayed coz of some engine hitch. After half an hour on take off, pilot announced return landing after emptying fuel. For my utter shock, the reason was the problem in the landing gear! On a casual talk with fellow passengers, i understood that these problems are day today issues and no one elevates it unnecessarily.
Same issues are common in Atlanta, the home base for Delta.
The fact is that in US and Europe people fly a lot and these issues have become common like tyre puncture in KSRTC.
I dont have special love for Air India, but i do appreciate their extending services to new places to Mangalore before anyone else.

I strongly agree with Mr. Shankar as i had flied for more than 250 times with almost 15 Airlines. i dnt say Air India is best, but compare to other airline air india stands in medium. I have experienced in Qatar Airways, Emirates, Turkish Airline, Ethihad Airline and many more.
I remember just 1 week before mangalore plane crash same happened in Libya too, unfortunately Airline was not able to give passengers list also.
One time i booked ticket from Benghazi to Tripoli and i reached Airport by time and shocked to know that flight already departed as flight is full. Later i came to know that you just need a ticket... no need to bother about time or date, u can fly any time.

We never see such incident with Air India.

Some people are keen to comment negatively what ever News is there. Thats y India is still developing not developed.

''May Day, May Day,' Said Air India Pilots on Touchdown: William Dalrymple'

Please google this article, you will probably then understand the plight of so many of Air India's passengers.

They knew there was a leak in the hydraulic system yet they took off.

I can relate a similar experience with an Air India Flight that I took early this year from Kuwait to Goa, the flight came in with a leak in the hydraulic system and took off with 129 odd passengers in the same condition. And I was told by an anonymous person that it was not a big problem.

I wonder if any of us on this forum can debate on the risks of flying 129 passenger on an aircraft with leak in the hydraulic system.

I did a random search for Air India's standing in the various ratings (well some of it might be biased) overall Air India didn't fare well.

The following may be taken with a pinch of salt.

There is no mention of Air India in the World's top 100 Airlines for 2015.

In the Airline Safety Rankings for 2015 by JACDEC, Air India is ranked 58th of 60 Airlines considered for this report. Incidentally Malaysian Airlines who were previously at 34th place were brought down to 57th position because of their two crashes.

I would be pleased to hear from you two as to how many more years it will take Air India to get into the 10 best Airlines in the world list.

It took Air India around 7 years to meet the minimum standards required for membership to the Stars Alliance program.

I would like to patronize my nation's carrier however they need to give me a better deal then the 25 grams of roasted peanut packets they throw at my face on board the aircraft 'compliments of Air India'. I need to feel safe to travel every time I board their flight as I pay much more than for the 25 grams of peanuts.

It's none of your business to ask me which airlines I took . I may traveled by kuwait airways or gulf air via bahrain . Here the issue is condition of Air India . May be because of Modijis frequent overseas visits all ground staff and crew members are busy to serve him and his delegation '!!!!!
