Delhi government to give more powers to school principals

New Delhi, Sep 8 (IANS): The Delhi government will give more powers to school principals whose limited authority in decision-making has proved to be a bottleneck in the institutions functioning, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Monday.

"Delhi government will give more powers to the principals of government schools and will remove administrative bottlenecks so that basic facilities can be provided in schools at the earliest," said Sisodia, who also holds the education portfolio, at the State Teachers Award Function here.

Noting that even for basic facilities like desks, tubelights and fans, principals needed approval from various departments, he said: "Ultimately it is the students who suffer due to this state of affairs when files keep roaming from department to department for months."

"Having reviewed the entire situation, the government has now decided to give more powers to principals, so that they get freedom from seeking administrative approvals for these small works," he added.

Delhi government runs 1,100 schools.
