Udupi, Sep 9: Udaya Kumar Shetty, who hails from Mandarti Heggunje in the taluk, has been appointed as joint secretary and legislative counsel in the union ministry of law and justice. He is the first ever Kannadiga to rise to this post, which ranks third from the top in the department.

After the appointments committee of the union cabinet headed by the Prime Minister cleared his name and made the appointment, Shetty, who belongs to 2003 batch of Indian Legal Service, took over charge on Monday September 7.

Shetty had studied in the private higher primary school at Heggunje and Mandarti high school in Kannada medium. He completed his PU education through National PU College at Barkur, before securing degree in law from Vaikunta Baliga Law College here. He secured postgraduate degree in labour law from University College, Bangalore University, and worked as lecturer in Vaikunta Baliga college from 1992 to 2000.

After working as law officer in Indian Law Commission from 2001 to 2003, he passed Indian Legal Service in 2003 and joined as assistant legislative counsel in the department of law and justice of union ministry. Thereafter, he functioned as deputy legislative counsel and additional counsel in the department.

The draft bills to be tabled in the parliament are prepared in the law ministry. Shetty will be in charge of drafting of laws of the central government.
