Customs official held for taking Rs 2.5 lac bribe at Bengaluru airport

Bengaluru, Sep 9 (IANS): CBI has arrested a Superintendent of Customs posted at Kempegowda International Airport for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 2.5 lac from an exporter.

According to a complaint, the Customs official had sought bribe for clearing a cargo of silk scarfs meant for export to a firm in Malaysia.

A CBI spokesperson said a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 was registered against the Superintendent of Customs.

"CBI laid a trap and the accused was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe. Searches were conducted at residential and official premises of the accused person," CBI spokesperson Kanchan Prasad said here today.

She said the accused was produced before a special judge for CBI cases in Bangalore and remanded to three days' police custody.

It is not only in Bangalore Mumbai is most corrupt. The custom officials and the police are both hand in gloves and very openly ask for bribes. This I am talking from my own experience when I was carrying 20gms of gold biscuit from Joyallukas beginning of May 2015 during my visit to India with receipt and d the same to the Mumbai customs they asked me to pay 30% plus as customs or Rs5000.00. I did not have the money to pay customs readily ,I had to shell out 3500 which I know was wrong on my part. The custom official did not take the money himself but asked a police to come and told me to leave the money on the table and stand till he collects it.I know reporting the same to any higher up will not help as all are hand in gloves else this corruption would not be happening right under their nose.

Taking bribe is the 'privilege' of the chair these officials sit in!!! I doubt, it would be impossible to single out a upright officer in this ocean of corruption!! Those holding this coveted posts mint money and invest in land, farm houses, high end cars, gold etc. in benami accounts and lead a lavish life, but what is the effect of this easy money earned through devious means on their lives is anybody's guess?? Jai Hind!!

I would like to write the previous incident which happened with a Muslim guy from bhatkal who had been stopped by immigration officer even having the all travel documents andd they did not allowed him to board the flight on that day.
Such officers whether in customs, police or at a govt offices where work done most of the time after taking bribe and these officers make huge properties, bank balance gold etc.
Govt need to issue a law if a officer caught whilst taking the bribe he/she must be suspended and recover his/her properties gold as per the beyond income which they
Received as a means of BRIBE. and sent them to jail.

Here in India the problem is with the person who gives the bribe. It looks like a custom to give something to the Govt. officials so that a job can be done. Once again bribe should not be given.

Surely this Custom official will be promoted shortly. Because in Mumbai a Udupi origin custom officer was suspended twice on corruption charges and for owning two Bar & Restaurant in Mumbai with unaccounted money. But last month the same corrupt custom officer was reinstated and promoted to Asst.Commissioner of Customs in Mumbai.

    Sudhakar,
No bribe, no favors or work being done on time.
Many years back, in Mumbai customs I had to bribe to get out of the customs with less hassle. The officer guided us how to pass the cash.
Forget about that few years back I had to bribe the peon at Mangalore Corporation to avail the death certificate of my late mother because the second day I was coming back to Kuwait.
I do not think the situation is better now a day. You people know better.

Arvind Kejriwal in one of the meetings, told that each one his colleagues who are in IRS today is making more than one crore each month.
I read one report wherein it is mentioned that an IAS probationer gets a dowry of 2 crores nowadays.
In Mumbai Lokandwala complex, there are hundreds of govt servants, each apartment costs 2 crore .
A Police Officer did not get salary for 6 months, but one weekend he went with his family for dinner, the bill was Rs 15,000.
Our country is deep in corruption and only God can save us.
