Long wait ends- Dharwad gets first IIT of Karnataka

Daijiworld Media Network - Dharwad (RJP)

Dharwad, Sep 10: The people of twin cities of Hubballi-Dharwad celebrated as soon as the news from the Union government selecting Dharwad to set up a new Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) reached them.

BJP MLA Aravind Bellad who was leading a campaign for IIT in Hubballi-Dharwad said that they have received an official communication from the ministry of Human resources development.

Karnataka had recommended Dharwad, Raichur and Mysuru. Mysuru even though was technically more competent, lost out to Dharwad for political as well as some other reasons.

BJP party sources said that lobbying by Union minister H N Ananth Kumar, opposition leader in the assembly Jagadish Shettar, Prahlad Joshi and Aravind Bellad worked in its favour. The leaders had made a strong pitch to the search committee in a presentation prepared by deputy commissioner P Rajendra Cholan and IAS officer P Manivannan.

A committee headed by former ISRO chairman UR Rao had submitted its report recommending an IIT in Hubli-Dharwad in 1998.

Required land of 500 acres for the project has been identified by the Dharwad district administration near Mummigatti on the Pune-Bengaluru national highway near Dharwad.

Union finance minister Arun Jaitley had announced an IIT for Karnataka in his budget address in March ending a 17-year wait for the state.

Members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and other organisations took out a procession in major streets of the city to show their happiness regarding the arrival of IIT in Dharwad.

While most of us here engage in discussing who should get credit for this, we miss the real point. How will the students of the state benefit from it? I have seen in IIM Blr, you hardly see anyone from Karnataka there.. then whats the use of harping on having a IIM/IIT...

I have seen other days in facebook.. our people fighting over which got smart city? whats the real use if you are not able to get those jobs

Kamathji, Definitely it will help. Currently very few people from Karnataka aspire for IITs. That number will increase. The best example is how Manipal institutions changed the educational scenario in the area.

When you get something for karnataka we should be proud. Who makes the usage it depends on future generation. Like today we enjoy our personal comfort because of our great grand father. Similar to that our next generation will enjoy the same. Here is the question how we can make karnataka state number one. It happens with everyones contribution and not from comments. Sowe all work and comments in posetive to make karnataka state with all facility which future generation needs.

Dharwad is really a suitable place for IIT, with good climate and also Rail-Road & Air Connectivity. If IIT had gone to Raichur then it would have been bad, because Raichur bordering Telangana is full of Telugu people with Andhra Culture. And as regards amenities Raichur is still lacking in many aspects. But why Mysore people are Crying foul. Do they want every good thing only in old Mysore area of Karnataka ?

Thank you Modiji for ing Dharwad for the proposed IIT.
selecting a city in Bombay-Karnataka region will eliminate regional imbalances and ensure uniform development.
The same way these BJP leaders must join hands and put pressure on the government to start work on Ankola Hubli Railway line which is on drawing board for 150 years.

Good suggestion about Ankola-Hubli line connecting to Konkan railway. However, SC has stayed that project based on the environmental concerns if I am not wrong. Unless Railways comes up an alternate plan of constructing many tunnels with least amount of damage to the forest area, that project is unlikely to take off.

Dharwar indeed is an ideal IIT Centre, although Mysore would also be equally good. Dharwar has a unique culture and it's people are very friendly and hospitable as well.
Anyway the State has at last something to offer its Students and we hope Bright youngsters from all over the State will be welcome at IIT Dharwar .

Moreover, it will also bring Belgaum (being just 2 hours from Dharwad) into focus and Maharastra's weak claims over Belgaum hopefully will recede.
Belgaum is also the headquarters of VTU (Vishveshwariah Technological University) for Engineering colleges in the State.
