Tianjin firefighters' families to be compensated

Beijing, Sep 11 (IANS): The families of firefighters who died in the Tianjin warehouse explosions will get compensation, the authorities said here on Thursday.

The families will be compensated 2.3 million yuan (about $370,000), Xinhua reported, citing the civil affairs department of Binhai New Area.

A total of 164 people, including 98 firefighters and 11 policemen, were killed in the blasts, while hundreds of people remain in hospital. Nine people are still missing.

The first batch of 55 firefighters were posthumously recognised as martyrs and the second group of martyrs will be recognised soon, the department said.

Two blasts ripped through a warehouse on the night of August 12 in Tianjin Port, where large amounts of toxic chemicals were stored.
