Mangaluru: Yettinahole row - Moily gheraoed; protestors wave black flags, shoe, detained

Mangaluru, Sep 12: Former union minister Dr M Veerappa Moily was on Saturday September 12 gheraoed by several protestors over the issue of the controversial Yettinahole project. The police then intervened and detained the protestors.

The incident took place just as Moily was leaving the premises of World Konkani Centre at Shaktinagar, where he had been to attend a programme.

Protestors as well media persons surrounded Moily and bombarded him with questions on the Yettinahole project, which he had inaugurated last year in Chikkaballapur.

The protestors led by Dinesh Holla, convenor of Sahyadri Samrakshana Sanchaya, also presented a memorandum addressed to the chief minister, urging the government to drop the project.

In response, Moily said, "I cannot do anything about it. So many things have happened since the foundation was laid. The project was sanctioned during BJP government's tenure in the state, and later inaugurated by CM Siddaramaiah. Our intention was only to provide water, from wherever we could. People in arid regions of the state are not getting pure water even if they dig deep. Our intention was only to provide water for them and not to cause harm to the Western Ghats."

When Dinesh Holla countered him with allegation that it was he who suggested using Netravati water, Moily denied it. He was repeatedly asked several questions on the project, but he did not answer any.

As Moily moved towards his car, the protestors showed black flags and started shouting slogans. One of the protestors even took off his footwear and waved it at Moily. The police then intervened and took the protestors.

'Yettinahole project will not affect Western Ghats; only intention is to provide drinking water'

Addressing a press meet at the World Konkani Centre after an MoU signing ceremony, Moily took questions on Yettinahole project and said, "There are nine rivers in north Karnataka which are going dry. Even though people have been suffering from three decades, there have been no solutions despite many proposals and plans. Children there are suffering from abnormalities because of lack of clean water. Hence, there is need for providing drinking water, and that is why excess water during rainy season at Yettinahole, Kaduhole and other streams will be provided to north Karnataka. This will be done only during four months in a year when its raining.

He further added, "It is an independent project and it is not Netravati river diversion. Yettinahole, Kaduhole and other rivers do not join Netravati - they join Kumaradhara river. We are not storing or lifting the water from here. About 300-500 TMC of excess water flows into the sea during monsoons, and out of this, only 24 TMC, which is just 0.2 percent of the total water, will be given to north Karnataka.

"There will be no destruction of forests or land acqusition. It is just a project to provide water to north Karnataka states," Moily stressed.

He also said that five institutions across the country, including those at Ranchi and Hyderabad, had made a study on providing drinking water. When reporters pointed out that a study by IISC had shown that the project was not feasible, he said, "There is huge confusion and lack of information among the people regarding this project. All the information will be given by the technical department on its website soon."

When a reporter pointed out that there are places where dams have been constructed and now have just knee-deep water, he said, "That is true, if there is no water, there is no point in constructing dams.

"Our intention is to only provide drinking water, no matter where it comes from. The Western Ghats will not be affected. If there is a need to intervene in future, I will do it," he assured.

Regarding absence of public hearing with ministers and MLAs on the project, he said, "Within this month there will be a meeting between the elected representatives, experts and people. I will also talk to the CM to organize this meeting. It is the duty of the government to clarify the doubts of the people."

To question whether he would stop the government from executing the project, he said, "I have no authority to stop this project, nor did I ask for its commencement. I do not want to interfere. There are authorized persons to take decisions. My only aim was to provide water to north Karnataka."

What right he has to do so. By spending 20,000 crores (as of now0 how much tax payers money is he spending on the project and whose money is it. Why not divert Hemavati water or clean the numerous tanks and lakes. Why he is misleading people. Why the work is going done chupke chupke. We have an environment minister who is dumb and knows nothing about the project. Should we allow leaders like this to to continue in public life?

Apparent intentions to provide drinking water appears to be benign, but there exists a surrogate design behind the project and both Congress and BJP are squarely responsible to the present situation. These political parties has well analysed shortcomings of democracy in Indian model dispensation. Adding to their comfort, memory of people are short wherein a stand alone rain may take away the harsh memories of scorching summer! World Konkany Centre should have refrained themselves from inviting controversial people. How they will defend the presence of a traitor of motherland at its premises? Do the presence of Mr. Moily could enhance value to their yeomen service to society? Mr. Moily could have been acceptable if he has used his academic and legal skills to defend his position convincingly rather than avoiding inconvenient questions. Notably, every clarification from his side has triggered hundreds of new questions. This sort of clarifications can only reinforce the doubts of general public, to do more harm than good to intended public interest. 500 TMC of water is highly exaggerated. Born and brought-up at foothills of western ghats, Mr. Moily should have been aware that catchment area of Nethravathi and Kumaradhara rivers never exceeds few hundreds square kilometers. Though having wide spacial variations, and as per OGD, total annual rainfall never cross 300-350 centimeters at these catchment areas. Projection of 500 TMC is against the basic sense of arithmetic and he should not put the reputation of his primary school in peril! To deceive the people of his land more convincingly, Dr. Moily could have calculated percentage with total water available in sea as denominator. He is good in visiting infinite options of arithmetic to convey disguising calculations and misleading figures. Considering potential, collateral and irreversible damage he has inflicted to society and environment, honorary doctorate conferred should be recalled by the University concerned

This is one issue where all politics must be kept aside and all the people of coastal Karnataka must come together and protest as a unified front. Government claims it wants to take excess water from Yettinahole and supply it to Kolar and Ramnagar. As Mangalorean's we do not get drinking water over selves throughout the year. Year after year the rains are getting scantier. A detailed project report is not yet made recently and the one made earlier has lot of flaws in it. Government wants to take 24 tmc water from Yettinahole. That must be the biggest joke ever. If you see Yettinahole it is more like a small stream of water flowing. Forget 24 tmc government will not even get 6-8 tmc water from it. Finally they will divert Nethravati River to achieve thier target and we the people of Mangalore will have no water left at all, as if we have any now. The whole project will take a huge toll on the western ghats which as been already named as sensitive ecological zone and also as a world heritage site. Finally neither Kolar nor Mangalore will get anything.
Tampering this sensitive ecological balance may trigger catastrophic events that may prove terrible for Coastal districts. See a video called Yettinahole project secret on youtube from Suvarna news to understand all true story of the project. Please unite now before its too late.

When the river water flows, it nurtures the land and it is true. Why then there are dams to store the water why not allowed to flow entirely thorough the river fully to nurture the land?

Why not use the same logic in the Kaveri river water issue.
Why only the excess water was allowed to flow to Tamil Nadu why not the river flows to Tamil nadu so as to nurture the land.

If I find excess food in my plate I can remove it and keep it in a bowel to share with others. I am not throwing my house food to Municipality. Of course the left over is thrown. The excess food of my house is given to my house keeper who comes daily to sweep or to the poor who are hungry or to the neighbors.

Here, the question of grabbing doesn’t arise because we are sharing God gifted excess rain water to our brothers and sisters.

Joseph, if there is excess water then sharing is not an issue.
Excess water is in Netravati only during rainy season, but Chikballapur and Kolar needs water during 2 months of peak summer.
Since you are from Puttur you know already that there won't be water in Netravati in summer.
Plus, whatever river water flows to the sea will come back as rain to all places. Mother nature already has better plans. More water gets evaporated from the sea, more rains will come. But if more water gets evaporated from other places, this won't result in more rain.
They have calculated 24 TMC whereas really there is only 9TMC. They won't get big funding if they really tell the actual figures. Then there is no big percentage for politicians.
So politicians will push for the project from all parties.
Also rain water harvesting and storage requires very less rains. They even do it in Rajasthan where rainfall is very less. 5-6 rains are enough for storing good amount of water.
Your intentions are good, I understand. But unfortunately politicians are not clean and whether the project is complete or not, whether people suffer or not, they want only percentage money. That is why it has gone up to 20000 crores now.

    RAIN WATER
Instead of destroying the ghats, why can't they make a rain water harvesting system? And leave our precious river alone

Joseph, the water is not planned for North Karnataka. It is for Chikballapur and Kolar. Veerappa Moily has no chice but to support it because he represents Chikballapur.
12000 crores and they are asking for more budget, already 700 crores spent - just go to Sakleshpur and check if 700 crores worth of work has been done. You will know the answer.

    Joseph gonslaves,

If these people gheraoed bjp politicians you would have built one more pyramid here and brings chaiwaala, bjp, modi, Gujarat. Stop this hypocrisy.

My grandmother used to tell, manushyag nage naachike ijjindala maana maryeda aanda bodu. You people lack all these four. Both these Sadananda Gowda and Moily used this yettinahole as trump card to win in last general election, while undivided DK rejected them both.

    Dear Mr. Sudhakar Kallianpur,

I am unaware of this protest was from BJP or from Congress or from the un-biased people.

Secondly why these people have not gheraod against Saddhu Gowda and Yeddyurappa and the Late V.S. Acharya who have proposed, planned and passed this project. Why there were no protests during the BJP rule in the Karnataka.

The project was proposed and planned by the Porn watchers of BJP and it was passed by the Sadduhu Gowda. The finance is from central government. Ask the chaaiwaala P.M. to A.M to stop central aid to this project. The project will be stalled instantly.

Keep your politics of S.K and D.K with you.

Short form of South Kanara in English = S/K.

And Dakshina Kannada is not in English It is Kannada.

I am commenting in English not in Kannada.

At least you should use some common sense. Don't involve in mixing silly billy Kannada and English.

First of all, why these stupid politicians of DK should be allowed to enter DK? Why they should be called for inauguration or any functions? They are traitors. Moily or Sadananda Gowda both are like different sides of same coin. Hope our sitting MLA's or MP take up the issue to stop the injustice to DK. If they show step motherly treatment to DK, then there should be separate state separating from Karnataka. Enough of injustice by these so called MP's or MLA's who won due to us and we sent them to Delhi or Bangalore and in Delhi they didn't raise any voice for us. Good example is Oscar Fernandes who is fit only to lick Congress High command.

The Project intend to take water from Nethavathi river only during rainy season. At present drinking water provided by Thumbe vented dam in mangalore and no scarcity of water is observed so far even if the 50% to 75% of water goes into Arabian sea. Out of this meager quantity which goes as a waste will be tapped into Yethinahole project. I don know what we loose..?? what way it affects western ghats..??. Let leave others also to live, they are asking for drinking water. Mankind not manufactured water. water is given by GOD.

I agree with Mangalore Voice. Mangalore is the rainiest city in India and we still have shortage in summers. That's because DK is a slope towards the sea and we have forgotten age old wisdom of constructing check dams (katte/kaat) to store water and adopted borewell culture (and false pride). So DK's water problems are due to lack of water storage and not because we have less water flowing in our rivers during monsoon. If excess water in monsoon and just a portion of it is diverted, that does not mean a whole river is diverted. Most of the noise is political and is being used to build a case for tulunadu state. I think we should share our excess with our brothers who don't get even a small fraction of our rain. Instead, our attention should be focused on how we manage the remaining 99% of rain water that is left after Yettinahole and ensure we don't waste God given gift by letting it go to the sea.

    Mangalore Voice, Kavoor:

Just do not be ignorant. Rain water must enter the sea, else varying PH of the water will make it impossible for the formation of rain clouds. It will be utter disastrous. The study has revealed only about 9 TMC of water will be available during rainy season. They plan to divert 24 TMC of water, the balance requirement will be met from the river Nethravathi diversion and and now our great greedy politicians thinking of secretly diverting Kumaradhara river also. IF PAST IS ANY GUIDE, IT WILL HAPPEN.

This project has already affected Elephant corridor and the elephants have already made their presence in Sullia and Shiradi Ghat. Selfish human beings HAVE are imbalanced Mother Nature and THE MOTHER NATURE KNOWS HOW TO BALANCE EVERYTHING with utmost disastrous CONSEQUENCES AND REVENGE. It will be too late. MARK MY THESE WORDS OF MINE AND REMEMBER THESE WORDS WHAT I WROTE HERE WHEN IT HAPPENS.
I am not against for providing drinking water to people. Once this project is implemented, they will supply not only drinking water, BUT THEY WILL PROVIDE WATER FOR INDUSTRIALISTS AND AGRICULTURISTS AT OUR COSTS. The politicians at Bangalore and in in our region know that we are the divided people and take advantage of our lethargy.

Let us stop playing with MOTHER NATURE and you have seen and read how the Mother Nature took revenge in the past when the human beings played with it NOT ONLY IN INDIA BUT IN OTHER PARTS OF THE WORLD.
It is time we have SEPARATE STATE consists of DK, Udupi, Uttara Khannada, Malanad Districts of Chickamagalur and Shivamogga as Kodagu has already have demanded for separate State. Think about what I have written here about the project.
    JAI HIND.
