Bantwal, Sep 12: The police on Saturday September 12 arrested the Veda teacher who was caught on camera thrashing and abusing a boy with a fractured arm.

The accused, Shyam Sunder Shastri (43), a resident of Urimajalu surrendered himself to Vittal police on Saturday, after which he was arrested.

The video showing Shastri beating a boy with a fractured arm, aged around 10 years, had gone viral on WhatsApp and other social media. Though the incident took place in May this year, it came to light only earlier this week, after the video was uploaded on social media.

The incident took place at a Veda camp organized in Vittal temple. The video also shows Shastri asking the boy in an angry tone if he was a 'Brahmana' or a 'Kshatriya'.

Taking serious note of the case, B K Sesappa, leader from Vittal Dalit Seva Samiti had filed a complaint urging the Vittal police to investigate the matter and take strict action against Shastri.

Soon after the police registered the case, Shastri absconded and the police began a search for him.
Vittal Dalit Seva Samiti, CITU and SFI staged a protest meet on Friday September 11.

On Saturday, Shyam Sunder Shastri appeared in Vittal police station accompanied by his lawyer, after which he was arrested. Soon, he was released on bail.

The incident garnered attention of the national media too.

Really how could a teacher hit a boy like this.Does he not have his own children? Would he have given the same treatment to them. Now that he is released on bail I think there will be no punishment also awarded. As usual mockery of our law in India. Pity India.

Wow first absconding, then comes with a lawyer to be arrested and a well done home work by the lawyer and soon gets released. How days he was missing so many days he should be jail, then only bail. Wow what a Indian system of bail, looks like its on sale with the lawyers.

    Dear all,
    2 points-
    1. I condemn physical punishments
    2. I also condemn giving religious and caste colour to everything. Having studied in jesuit institution (I am very grateful for the education they provided) this type of beating was common. BBC also ran a story about 2 Koran teachers who have been jailed in Birmingham UK for beating a boy mercilessly with stick which was done for reciting the Koran wrongly. So this beating some people do has got nothing to do with religion and caste. (In this case I have been told by some friends in Vittla that the reason he was asking if the boy was Brahmin or Kshatriya was not because of castism but because the boy apparently was sitting in a chair in the temple which is reserved only for the "Arasu" ie the royal family (who are Kshatriya) and apparently no one except the royal family can use the chair. This of course does not justify beating, it only says people are giving caste angle when none exists)

In the best interest of the public.., the top level Brahmin controlled think tank of reputed Hindu cultural organisations having pan India presence to give their opinion or clarify their position.

Why the Brahmin mind set is so low against other non-brahmin people.

In the above instance the veda teacher mending the fellow brahmin boy's mind (in order to keep a gap/distance) towards other fellow non-brahmins Hindu's.

In my opinion the proposed or much talked about BJP's Uniform Civil code must address these kind of anomalies which prevail within Hindu's.

Its very sad to watch the boy crying. A strict action should be taken against this teacher and it should be a lesson for other teachers like him. However, on the lighter note.. when I was young, children like me used to take beatings at home, with neighbours and at school. It was very usual those days..no human rights..no child rights..But now a days people have become too sensitive and understand the rights of other human being.. Good that we are changing.

The Veda teacher needs to suffer some practical lesson of public punishment.

I don't want to hurt anybody but would be greatly delighted to have a chance to whip him in the public for mishandling a defenseless young boy physically and emotionally in front of his friends. Vedas of torturing he must experience.

The physical pain of the boy will fade away but the emotional pains and the critical whirlwind against him from his friends will scar him for a very long time, may be for ever and he would be turning sometimes as an anti-social human being due to this "Veda" medication mistreatment.

If this were to happen in America the teacher would be behind bars immediately. What is the Indian police waiting for? Arrest the teacher. Protect the child from the abuser. He is not worthy to be called a teacher. Shame on this teacher turned butcher.
