Mangaluru: John M D'Souza, pioneer of catering business in city, passes away

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (RJP)

Mangaluru, Sep 14: John D'Souza, proprietor of M D'Souza Caterers and pioneer of catering business in Mangaluru passed away here on Sunday, September 13. He was 77.

John D'Souza is survived by wife Gracy D'Souza, son Loy, daughter-in-law Divya and two grand children.

M D'Souza and Sons has been a well-known catering company, beginning as bakers and confectioners, for the past 90 years. The company was started by Pius D'Souza, the father of John D'Souza. John lost his father when he was six years old. Then his mother Magdelene D'Souza managed the small company for many years till John took over the mantle of responsibility.

John, a visionary, knew that people of Mangaluru desperately needed a catering service at that time. He gradually ventured into catering from the bakery business, and within no time it became a company famous for its service and quality of food. In addition to thousands of functions in the city, the company had catered breakfast to the crowd of 50,000 when Pope John Paul (now saint) visited Bajpe in Mangaluru.

John retired from business a few years back and handed it over to his son Loy.

Although we have utilized the catering services of M. D'Souza and Sons, we do not think we ever met Mr. John D'Souza or even his son Loy D'Souza. I think we know Loy's wife. Our condolences to the family. We want the catering dedication to continue.

When we were kids we used to be awed by Mr.John and battalion of catering staff,in neat uniforms invading the hall and distributing the cake and wine before the toast. And who can forget the wonderful cake exhibitions which would create a traffic jam at Market Road in front of his store. He was ahead of his time in service. RIP Mr.John M.D'Souza.
