Singapore, Sep 14 (IANS): The haze condition in Singapore continued to deteriorate on Monday, with strong smoking smell that choked nearly the whole island nation.
The three-hour Pollutants Standard Index (PSI) climbed further to 150 as of 6.00 p.m., according to Singapore's National Environment Agency (NEA).
However, the real condition was very likely to be much worse as the visibility was deteriorating every 15 minutes, Xinhua news agency reported.
Most residents were staying indoors, with many wearing masks on street.
There was an acrid smell of burning in the air, which could even be smelled inside with all windows closed.
The smog was heavy, with buildings opposite the street barely visible.
Singapore is being shrouded by a haze caused by farmers in neighbouring Indonesia burning forests to clear land for agriculture.
The smog is rated as being in the mid- to low-range of unhealthy air quality.
