Puttur, Sep 15: Thousands of people accompanied by leaders braved heavy rains on Tuesday September 15 and raised a united voice against the controversial Yettinahole Integrated Drinking Water Project at Uppinangady here.

In a massive protest called by Anti Netravati River Diversion Action Committee and other like-minded bodies, around 7,000 people marched from Aditya hotel to Uppinangady bypass junction, blocking the national highway all morning. Towards the afternoon, the protestors courted arrest as part of the planned 'jail bharo andolan'.

The police who were comparitively very less in number struggled to arrest all the protestors. However, many who led the protest, like Dr Niranjai Rai and others were detained and taken away in police buses. The other protestors continued to sit in dharna despite heavy rains, demanding the scrapping of the Yettinahole project.

Prior to the agitation, Puttur MLA Shakuntala Shetty met the protestors and said that though she could not join the protest being part of the government, she was against the project.

"I am part of the government, so I cannot join the protest, but being the people's representative I will represent your voice in the state Assembly. I have already raised this issue in the Assembly. We have to find alternative way. I cannot protest here as it would be anti-government," she told the protestors.

"I will urge the government to find other alternatives to provide water to Kolar and other regions," she assured.

Without naming union law minister and former CM D V Sadananda Gowda, Shetty said, "Being from Dakshina Kannada, he implemented the project during his tenure as CM. Our government only took it forward. Only MLA Vasanth Bangera and I have raised voice against this project. I will also meet CM Siddaramaiah personally and bring the matter to his attention.

"The union government should interfere in the matter and drop the project as it affects the ecology and environment. They can lift water by building dams, but this project is harmful," she added.

Regarding Ramanath Rai's support to the project, she said, "Being part of the government, Rai and other ministers cannot express their personal opinions even if they are against the project. They cannot go against the government. Why is Sullia MLA S Angara not joining the protest?"

The protestors told Shakuntala Shetty that if she is able to stop this project, they would support her in future also.

Beltangady MLA Vasanth Bangera who visited the protest venue for a short while said, "I am against the Yettinahole project. People from Dakshina Kannada and Udupi should join hands and protest against this. It is our duty. The project is not scientifically feasible and it is not small amount that is going into it."

Asked if he was ready to resign as he had stated earlier, he said he would think about it.

Addressing the protest, Dr Niranjan Rai, convener of Anti Netravati River Diversion Action Committee, said, "We are not against providing drinking water, in fact we are ready to give water for the entire Karnataka. But this project is harmful to the environment and ecology, and its method is all wrong. They are diverting water from the base of the river which will harm the Western Ghats. This project is nothing but a means to loot the people. All people irrespective of caste, creed and religion have joined the protest today.

"The coastal region is beautiful because of the Western Ghats, hence the government should stop this project immediately. If the environment is harmed, it will be a curse upon us," he added.

"The project will not fetch 24 TMC of water as projected, but only 9 TMC. Efforts are also going on to divert water from the Netravati and the Kumaradhar rivers. Also, 220 mw of electricity will be required for this project, and to fulfill that need, the government will also implement the Niddodi ultra mega power project. Already we are facing problems due to UPCL, and in future, the problems will only increase," he said.

"Our representaives are fooling the people. They have betrayed us, and it is a matter of great shame. People have chosen them to raise voice in the Assembly. We too are contributing to the income of the state, hence all people of this region should unite," he urged.

Dinesh Holla, convenor of Sahyadri Samrakshana Sanchaya, said, "There are two things - one, the government says only excess water will be taken, and secondly, it says excess rain water will be taken. The government should clarify where is excess water - has it done any study? Every citizen needs to ask the elected representatives three questions - Did you visit the spot of the project, do you know how much water is there in Yettinahalla, and did you make any detailed report."

"The Karnataka irrigation department says that 24 TMC of water will be available through this project, but the study by IISc has revealed that only 9 TMC of water can be available. The officials are trying to twist the report.

MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, Sri Rajashekharananda Swamiji of Gurupur Vajradehi Math, Sri Gurudevananda Swamiji of Odiyoor Math, Sri Mohandas Paramahamsa Swamiji of Mahalaxmi temple, Manila, Youth Congress leader Mithun Rai, Bajrang Dal leader Sharan Pumpwell and many others joined the protest.

Addressing the protest, Vajradehi Swamiji said, "Netravati river is important to all, irrespective of religion or caste. It is chiefly important for agriculture in this region. This protest should reach the governments, both at the state and at the centre. In future this should turn into a great revolution."

Religious leader of Puttur mosque S B Mohammed Dharami said, "Netravati is like our mother and it gives water to the entire district. This cause has united us. Man should give importance to three entities - God, nature and humanity. This helps in smooth functioning of the world. Political will has diminished among our leaders.

"We are not against giving water to anyone. They can take as much water as they need through tankers, but we are against any project that goes against nature," he added.

"When our religious centres are under threat, we rush to save them, so now when our river is under threat, we should come together to save it. This river is a symbol of harmony," he said.

Odiyoor Swamiji said, "We should introspect why we are here. We are not opposing provision of water, but the diversion of Netravati river, which is the lifeline of this region. Irrespective of caste and creed and religion have all joined here. Everyone should support this cause. We should be ready for every kind of struggle in the coming days. We should be proactive and determined in this cause.

"There should be awareness in schools and colleges and even women should join in large numbers. The protest should reach the union government," he said.

Even actor Arjun Kapikad joined the protest and demanded the scrapping of the project. "Without Tulunadu, there won't be any Tulu films. The entire Tulu film industry should also support this cause and save our river and our motherland," he urged.

When more protestors tried to join in, the police stopped them at Subramanya cross road. However, after the intervention of the organizers of the protest, the police allowed them.

The police finally managed to disperse the protestors after detaining many of them. By late afternoon, the traffic was restored.

My dear Mangalureans, First time in the Indian political history this project is going to become BJP-CONGRESS bhai bhai Scam.
On behalf of all Mangalurean's through this DaijiWorld flatform I want to clear few doubts and hope our political leaders will reply us:
    1) What %share DVS Gowda & V Moily going to get out of this Project?

    2) In the month of September we can see how much water is there in Netravathi. 1 Tmc = 1,000,000,000 cubic feet (2830 crore’s liters), 24 TMC water from where you will going to give them & how much TMC will remain for D.K?

    3) Can't you people invest those 12,000 crores in Seawater Desalination?. In Gulf countries more than 50% of Drinking water comes from desalination & around 40% from the mining of non-renewable groundwater.

    4) Instead of giving slow poison from this project, if you really want to assassinate Mangalureans, Can't you leak gas from MRPL like Bhopal disaster?. So that you can supply any district whatever you want to.

I urge Mr. Nalin K Kateel to raise his voice in the Parliament sessions. You are the right leader to convince Mr. Narendra Modi.
Our city is becoming SMART but unfortunately our political leaders acting OVER SMART !!!!!

It is nice to see all religion people are gathered for their right demand and the protest will succeed in that manner only when people demand for the region not for religion. It is the right time to show our strength in unity against this project, we have already allowed many projects in our area like MRPL in Jokatte and UPCL in Nandikoor where local people are suffering and other region people are getting the benefits for our sacrifice. Usually our coastal people are very week in protest against any project sanctioned by Govt. If we intensify our fight against this project and demand for separate Thulunadu state then such type of problems will not arise. Both the BJP and Cong are responsible for the project and we have to fight against this by setting a separate political party in separate state name rejecting all national parties it is the only solution.

I wish all the best for the endeavors who are fighting for their right.

My home place is in news for a good cause. Obviously, this project is going to be a great threat to the bio-diversity in the entire Western Ghats, which is considered to be rare biological hot-spots on the globe. There would be loss of biodiversity, reduction in downstream flows, damage to fisheries and wild life, pressure created on land that might cause seismic tremors. The project would lead to massive destruction of forests and landslip. Changing the direction of the river would have impact on people depending on it. Why to implement such anti environment project?

I think our protest is not sufficient. Did anybody observe Kannada news in TV. The kannada news channels did not publish more about the protest against Yethinahole. They are not in a position to hear our problem. In their view the protesters are the defaulters. In Kannada news they are blaming the protesters. The problem is not solve until and unless the separation of Tulunadu (including Malenadu) from Kannada Nadu. I am asking why can not they take water from other rivers like Tunga Bhadra? They keep entire Thunga Bhadra water for them and they want other's water. Thunga Bhadra rivers are more close to Kolar and it is flowing above the western Ghats. No electricity is required for lifting the water. that means they keep their wives with them and they want other's wife for enjoyment.

Government of the people,by the people and for the people so far thoughts of study. A new definition invented irrespective of parties the politicians invented "i am part of the Government". Then what about the people who choose these politicians to become part of the government. This mean to say being part of the government we have fully accepted the pruoject even at the cost of the people who elected them.We have no relationship with the people once election is over. The move of the people is overwhelming and we must elect people who are part of the people and not the people who parted us putting in difficulties. For our good we must come out from petty politics.People from all section of this region must support the protest against the project and come out from any political affiliation. No politicians should be given dias.

At the outset,I would not call this as Yettinahole project, but river nethravathi diversion project.
The proposed project is ecologically unsound & economically unviable. This is going to affect the hydrologic regions affecting the local ecology, biodiversity, and livelihood of people living in the region.
The project would cause habitat fragmentation & shrinkage resulting in enhanced human animal conflicts.
There are numerous ways of improving water availability like Decentralising water harvesting by using lakes, ponds, tanks.Restoring the existing lakes, reusing waste water, recharging ground water, planting native species of herbs & plants in catchment areas, etc.
The cost of the project may run into nearly 10000 crores which may again burn a big hole in the exchequer. And finally we the common
citizens are going to bear the brunt

Being part of Government our Elected representatives you can not join the protest - it is shameless statement - we can not accept it. Before part of Government you are first representative of the people who are elected you. Please learn from Sri Kagodu Timmappa and Sri Ramesh Kumar.
So times Government communicated that we shall have meeting with us and why are you not fixing the date? why are not replying to the ten question raised by Sahyadri Samrakshana Samithi ?
Where is the Detailed Project Report (DPR)? Why are you hiding ? If you are true to this nation - please be transparent. Otherwise entire project considered as looting project. Varahi project is the example for this.

There is a small land for Tulu speaking people and they want to destroy this. They choose Mangalore and udupi for all projects, so shameful they dont even have drinking water also. Many of the Bangalore population are from outside Karnataka. Why cant they put a Ultra mega Power plant at Kolar and Tumkur and bring water from Chennai Sea.~~.

This is very hurting and feeling very sad to note the statement made by some of our elected representatives that as they are either part of the government or in the government, they can't join the rally and protest. This is anti-government.This is ridiculous statement. In fact they should join in the rally and muster their solidarity in order to give more weight and boost. When the rally was organized with good intention by all the organizations, institutions regardless of their parties, misunderstandings, caste, religion, political differences of opinion whatever may be and raise their voices unanimously. Then only there is weight in the protest. As the saying goes "United we stand, divided we fall".

Therefore I request all the people must join together and raise their voice against this Anti-people Yethinahole project. All the elected representatives should awake from their slumber, join hands together and convey the feelings of the people setting aside their whatever the differences opinion and stop this unnecessary polling of money from the government's exchequer, that is people's money generated through tax collection.Understand the feelings /sentiments of the people.

Sink all the differences now and join together.

Imagine...Just Imagine RG on the scene o.k...addressing protesters..
    Ladies and Gentlemen...
Some points I would like to share with you...
    1. Yettina Hole when translated
    becomes Bullock's Hole...
    2. Some people have made this Hole their Goal...
    3. Bullock and Ass are similar work doers..
    4. So from 3 above this project can also be called 'Ass Hole 'project...
    5. This project as it's very name suggests is sure to burn a 'Hole' in the pocket of the Sate's treasury...
    6. On account of the above reasons we have to plug this hole.
    7. Plugging an Ass Hole is not easy.
Those who have widened this Hole
should now pull their socks and be on the job...
I am always for free flowing of waters without diversions.
I will sit with a panel of experts on Bullock and ASS holes and try to sort out the matter. Politicians from Karnataka I know are expert in and have done PHD's in Ass holes and Bullock Holes.
Keep your fingers crossed and hope for the best...I am with you..

DisAgree [3] Agree [17] Reply Report Abuse

  • kfp, mangalore

    Tue, Sep 15 2015

Noel, it's not about Mangalore vs Bangalore. Both are people and both need water.
There is no surplus water, this is the actual fact. Wrong calculations are shown to get a go-ahead for the project. IISc reports and other independent research confirms this again and again.

Don't believe me, don't believe the reports. Just go to netravati and see it in summer to understand the situation. The actual official plan is to divert netravati if 24TMC requirement is not met from Yettinahole. Still not met? Divert Kumaradhara...that is the plan. If there is excess water, why there is even mention of diverting Netravati and Kumaradhara?

Of course we should not have neglected kasturirangan report but at least now we are waking up. You are right, we did not wake up during that time, but that doesn't mean we should be sleeping now also.

Common people get involved when they start understanding what is really going on. This is what is happening now. Everybody is slowly understanding that if we sleep any more, there won't be anything left.

Also, the project is named "Yettinahole" just to confuse people - to make people think that it is not Netravati. Open google maps and search, you will know that it is actually Netravati.

lets not debate why the project was then not stopped... think of now. Let's all stand together and ensure this govt doesn't succeed in their plan to screw up the coastal region. Whole world knows it's a stupid project against the environment and just because of vote bank and also political prestige Congi Govt is stick to this project. When they are saying BJP initiated this project and Congress is not responsible, at least respecting people's demand why don't they scrap it at least now. That shows they don't want to cancel and loose the votebank, instead , just by giving stupid justifications they want to complete it. it's very transparent now and we know what and why the project is taken forward. Please stop this project and respect people's wish and demand. Also let's not go against nature... tomorrow , I am sure... both the parties, who are demanding for nethravathi and also the coastal region which is having nethravathi now, both the lands will be barren, that much is sure, if the project is executed.
